We knew that this one would be a real test. Last season, having dominated the first half and, having missed a number of chances, they came at us strongly and we held on for a decent point in the end. Would it be a similar experience this time. In some ways it was.
We played extremely well in the first half. Both managers agreed on that. Heath missed a decent chance at the end of the half but, in truth, had we been more clinical, it wouldn’t have mattered. We need a natural goalscorer but then who doesn’t? We have two important attacking players out with injury and maybe the window may provide part of the answer. Certainly, players should want to come here, house prices notwithstanding. Ahadme might have enjoyed playing against the Ravens team of giants but in terms of quality, we already have plenty.
Bromley changed their shape and relied increasingly on free kicks and corners.
Knight broke the deadlock after 67 minutes, latching onto an exquisite, lofted pass from Kai Kai, drawing the keeper and slotting the ball under him. It was a fine goal showing exactly what our forwards are capable of Ben himself just needs to become more ruthless. As it is, he is a real handful for most teams. I always think it’s a mistake to take him off. When he’s on the pitch defenders are wary and have to hang back.
Perhaps we sat back too much but Bromley’s equaliser came from a fine 15 yard shot from Adeboyejo, who we know is a dangerous opponent.
It was good to hear an opposing manager say, “We couldn’t get near them in the first half and they forced us to drop deep”. Both managers were prepared to give credit to the other team, a welcome contrast with the usual whinging and hard luck stories we are often treated to. Fans know what they’ve seen and both sets of fans can be happy with their team’s performance yesterday. Now, if I supported Spurs or Leicester….
