Last season we began putting up match day sheets around the ground that contained information about the opposition side.
We will be doing the sheets again during the coming League season. So keep a look out for them on match day Below are the Ipswich and Leicester sheets which are on line only Cambridge United v. Ipswich Town Saturday 27th July 2019 Although they didn’t reach the Football League until 1938, Ipswich were formed back in 1878 when local mp Mr. T. C. Cobbold was voted president. Originally called Ipswich Association FC to distinguish from the older Ipswich Football Club which played Rugby. The two clubs amalgamated in 1888 and became Ipswich Town. The handling game was dropped in 1893. ***************** Ipswich were elected into the Football League in 1938 the same year as Cambridge City turned down the chance of Football League status in favour of remaining an amateur club. ***************** Ipswich Town have provided two England managers in Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby Robson. They won the Football League Championship in 1962 under Ramsey and the FA Cup in 1978 & UEFA Cup in 1981 under Robson. **************** The two clubs have met on five occasions in first team competition. In 1991/92 The U’s went top of the old second division with a 2-1 win at portman road. In the return at the Abbey Ipswich forced a 1-1 draw. Back in 1986 United knocked Town out of the League cup with a 1-0 victory at the Abbey. But in 1993 Town repaid the complement by winning 4-1 over two legs. ***************** Players to have played for both clubs include Michael Cheetham, Nathan Abbey, Jonas Axeldal, Colin Harper and Reggie Lambe. Cambridge United v. Leicester City 23rd July 2019 In 1884 a group of young men, mainly old boys from Wyggeston School, met in a house on the old Roman road called Fosse Way and founded Leicester Fosse Football Club. Ten years later and after moving to Filbert Street in 1891 Leicester Fosse were elected to the Football League. ****************** After the First World War the club was wound up, but a new club Leicester City was formed immediately to take their place. They remained at Filbert Street until 2002 when they move into Walkers Stadium. ****************** Leicester City have only spent one season, 2008-09, outside the top two divisions of English football. Six years later they were Premier League champions under the guidance of manager Claudio Ranieri. ***************** In the F.A. Cup Leicester have the unique record of being runners-up four times but never been winners. They have won the League Cup on three occasions in 1964, 1997 & 200. ***************** In League competition, including a Play-Off Semi Final in 1992, the clubs have met 14 times with Leicester winning seven times to Cambridge’s two and five draws. ****************** Players who have played for both clubs include Trevor Bejamin, Steve Claridge, Brian Greenhalgh, Michael Morrison, Dion Dublin, Lee Philpott, Gary Rowett, George Taft & Rodney Slack.
