CFU Corner

Today marks the end of the season, and it’s being one full of challenges and excitement along the way. Let’s hope everyone who is associated with Cambridge United is celebrating promotion to league 1 this evening, in what would be a remarkable achievement for the football club, in their 50th Anniversary season of being elected into the football League.

It was great to see everyone In English football, sporting organisations and people across the world showing solidarity with the social media blackout last week. There is still a lot more to be done and we must now call on popular social media platforms like Facebook & twitter to use their power to affect change and ensure there are real life consequences for online hate.

The Internet and Social media is a powerful platform for sports organisations to engage with their fan base and community also, so it was fantastic to learn that Cambridge United have come third in the latest football engagement index, this week out of 91 other football league clubs. This season due to the pandemic the club has had to work harder at communicating and engaging with its fan base and has done well at keeping in touch with its fan base, well done to everyone that has worked on fan engagement at Cambridge United.
CFU committee members Emma Smith and Gina Parkin have recently set up a group recently for female fans called Amber Belles. The Group is for female fans of Cambridge United around the world to be united together. Cambridge Fans United are on a mission with the football club to work at making the abbey stadium a place where everybody feels welcome and safe. To this end, a social space for female fans to chat openly with each other has being created. We hope we can encourage other ladies and girls to find out what makes the mighty U’s so special and increase the number of Amber Belles. The group is open to anyone, regardless of Gender who supports the group’s aims. You can find out more details on how to get involved in the social group by searching Amber Belles on Facebook

Cambridge Fans United have their next planned committee meeting on 17th May and will communicate more details to current members shortly. We continue to work hard at being a voice for our fellow fan and also creating links for the football club within the local community. Cambridge Fans United now has over 400 members and is growing all the time. You can still sign up as a member to the supporters trust for as little as five pound for the year and give your input into the club by visiting Cambridgefansunited.org.

We should finish by sparing a thought today to our friends at Grimsby town, who have been relegated out of the football league, alongside Southend United. We know too well how Grimsby will be feeling like a wounded tiger, as we experienced a similar fate away at Rushden and Diamonds, in 2005 after 35 years in the football league. Grimsby is a proud club with a great set of fans and people behind them, and we hope to see them bounce back very soon.

‘’ Be Kind, Be courteous, Be united’’
