Match day fact sheets - Leicester City and Ipswich Town

26/7/2019

Picture
Picture
Last season we began putting up match day sheets around the ground that contained information about the opposition side.

We will be doing the sheets again during the coming League season.

So keep a look out for them on match day

Below are the Ipswich and Leicester sheets which are on line only

Cambridge United v. Ipswich Town

Saturday 27th July 2019
Although they didn’t reach the Football League until 1938, Ipswich were formed back in 1878 when local mp Mr. T. C. Cobbold was voted president. Originally called Ipswich Association FC to distinguish from the older Ipswich Football Club which played Rugby. The two clubs amalgamated in 1888 and became Ipswich Town. The handling game was dropped in 1893.
*****************
Ipswich were elected into the Football League in 1938 the same year as Cambridge City turned down the chance of Football League status in favour of remaining an amateur club.
*****************
Ipswich Town have provided two England managers in Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby Robson. They won the Football League Championship in 1962 under Ramsey and the FA Cup in 1978 & UEFA Cup in 1981 under Robson.
****************
The two clubs have met on five occasions in first team competition. In 1991/92 The U’s went top of the old second division with a 2-1 win at portman road. In the return at the Abbey Ipswich forced a 1-1 draw. Back in 1986 United knocked Town out of the League cup with a 1-0 victory at the Abbey. But in 1993 Town repaid the complement by winning 4-1 over two legs.
*****************
Players to have played for both clubs include Michael Cheetham, Nathan Abbey, Jonas Axeldal, Colin Harper and Reggie Lambe.

Cambridge United v. Leicester City
23rd July 2019
In 1884 a group of young men, mainly old boys from Wyggeston School, met in a house on the old Roman road called Fosse Way and founded Leicester Fosse Football Club. Ten years later and after moving to Filbert Street in 1891 Leicester Fosse were elected to the Football League.
******************
After the First World War the club was wound up, but a new club Leicester City was formed immediately to take their place. They remained at Filbert Street until 2002 when they move into Walkers Stadium.
                                                            ******************
Leicester City have only spent one season, 2008-09, outside the top two divisions of English football. Six years later they were Premier League champions under the guidance of manager Claudio Ranieri.
*****************
In the F.A. Cup Leicester have the unique record of being runners-up four times but never been winners. They have won the League Cup on three occasions in 1964, 1997 & 200.
*****************
In League competition, including a Play-Off Semi Final in 1992, the clubs have met 14 times with Leicester winning seven times to Cambridge’s two and five draws.
******************
Players who have played for both clubs include Trevor Bejamin, Steve Claridge, Brian Greenhalgh, Michael Morrison, Dion Dublin, Lee Philpott, Gary Rowett, George Taft & Rodney Slack.

As a family, my mum Kerri, my sister Cydnie and I will be setting up a charity in memory of my dad Justin Edinburgh.

The Justin Edinburgh 3 Foundation is at the very beginning of its journey. We hope that dad's name and legacy, along with his story, can help others. We are currently in discussion with relevant parties to find the right charity for the foundation to support using all money raised through different fundraising events and campaigns. At this early stage, we believe it will focus on a charity related to heart or brain health

We will also be campaigning to change the law to ensure all health and fitness clubs across the UK are equipped with defibrillators

Adding Club Identity Part 1

18/7/2019

Picture
It is coming up to the second anniversary since the volunteers started at the club.

One of main concerns raised at the beginning was the lack of club identity around the ground for example a lack of the club colours around the ground

We have tried to rectify this during this period by increasing the areas painted Amber and Black or add items wherever  possible to include these colours.

The latest ided has been to add Amber and Black stars around the ground to brighten up blank walls. Some of them are shown below

There has been no cost to the club when we have added Amber and Black. The cost of the paint has been paid for by the CUFC Lottery, individuals and sponsorship by local and national companies

The information boards shown in the photo above have been put back up during the past week in time for the pre season matches.

They have been put up in the corridor outside the Dublin Suite under the Main Stand

It should now be possible for them to be seen by even more supporters than before.

The information on them is fascinating and if you can spend some time reading them we would highly recommend you do so.

Light Blue Project - see what is happening

15/7/2019

Picture
Last month 100yearsofcoconuts, CFU and CUFCLottery joined together to commence work on a new project.

100yearsofCoconuts  have been donated copies of the Light Blues by Trevor Hobson-Frohock covering the period from the 60's

Everyone of a certain age will remember the Light Blue that was produced on a Saturday evening within hours of the match ending. Remember it was in the days before modern technology and techniques were in place.

Phones were hardwired in those days and reports had to be rung in by the journalist and then transcribed. It would then need to be set up manually so the paper could be printed. The Evening News offices were based in Newmarket Road at the time

Work on the evening started off (after a fish and chip supper) by sorting them into year order. It also gave everyone involved a chance to remember some of the highs and some of the lows during the period.

Shortly, work will begin to scan all the copies. This will be a considerable task and will take a while to do.

Once scanned the copies will be put on line for everyone to see.

You can also read Randall Butt story here www.100yearsofcoconuts.co.uk/randall-butt.html

Randall has seen them come and he's seen them go. During a Cambridge Evening News career that spanned over 30 years, Randall Butt had a unique insight into happenings at Cambridge United. When he joined in 1973, Bill Leivers' side were about to have a crack at joining the Third Division. When he left to go freelance in 2004, United were staring into the abyss of administration and a return to non-League football.

In 2012, as the U's celebrated their centenary, Randall sat down to write his memoirs, starting from his early days in the South Wales valleys. Whenever we see him at the Abbey, at Fen Tigers speedway in Mildenhall or in the Cambridgeshire Collection, we try to persuade him to finish the job.

Did you work on producing the Cambridge Evening News Light Blue during the period it was being printed?
Can you provide the inside story of how it was produced, printed and delivered so quickly on a Saturday evening?
Was some of it printed during the week in advance of Saturday or was it all done on a Saturday?

If you did please contact us via the contact form below.

Please also contact us if you would like to know more about the project.

During the summer there has been work going on which we haven't mentioned previously.

In addition to the work carried out at the Abbey Stadium the group was asked to complete some decorating / maintenance work at the training ground before pre-season training commenced

There has also been work carried out to provide irrigation on one of the pitches. This should allow training to continue when it was previously unable to be.
