Andrew Stephen - Hot off the Habbin Crawley Programme Article

I could not break records; so I decided to shatter them”. Dhliwayo
Whenever I think of Creepy Crawley, I think of natural charmers Steve Evans and our own Paul Raynor, the agitation twins. Using tricks and tactics honed to perfection at Boston United, Evans made Crawley hard to beat and horrible to watch. In terms of gamesmanship they made Leeds United of the early seventies look like hapless amateurs. Diving, shrieking, off the ball provocation and intimidation of match officials were all part of their repertoire of soccer skills. Of all the teams we saw in the Conference, they were the ones least worth watching.

Of course, much has changed since then and more recent managers have turned them into a decent and highly watchable footballing side. Harry Kewell introduced a cultured brand of football but wasn’t particularly successful with it. John Yems has added competitive steel to their attractive style and their FA Cup win over a less savvy incarnation of Leeds was well deserved. It was achieved so easily that they even had the opportunity to give Reality TV star, Mark Wright, his professional football debut. Will we see him at the Abbey? I wonder. They will have to take us more seriously than Leeds.
Picture
Picture
Going back to Steve Evans for a moment, if I must, he was obviously so impresses with Rob Cundy when we thrashed Gillingham that he decide to hijack his loan to us from Bristol City. They say class is permanent. Having sold the Franz Beckenbaur of League 2, it seems reasonable to expect the arrival of an experienced centre half this week and maybe one other player. Promotion is on the cards and we need to be as strong as we can be without gambling with money we haven’t got. It’s a real pleasure to see a couple of Spurs youngsters here. They will do well here. Maybe Jack Roles would have done better coming back?

Social media remains a study in drama. So often this season we see demands that Bonner be sacked, claims that the wheels have come off and that our performances are dire. Then we score a couple and all the nonsense is forgotten. A point against an excellent Bradford team was well won. Where are we in the league?

Dave Matthew-Jones SLO article from the Bradford programme

We have now reached the half way point in the 2020/2021 season. It has been a strange experience for supporters not being able to attend matches. Especially when the team is performing so well on the pitch and being the top of the league.  However, it now when everyone’s support is even more appreciated. It is wonderful to see how supporters have got behind the club in some many different ways over recent months. It reminds me of the periods when the club was finding things difficult and everyone pulled together and got the club through those times. Hopefully during the coming months, we will remain United in Endeavour.

With the latest lockdown in place and no sign of when it will end it is even more important, we all come together and support each other. If you can ring or text someone to make sure they are alright please do so. You may be the only person they hear from. If you find yourself needing to speak to someone then see the numbers via the You are never alone link https://tinyurl.com/y5t8d6fc

Hopefully, now the vaccinations are starting to take place a return to some kind of normality may be possible. It is good to see a company associated with Cambridge United being at the forefront of this programme. I think we all would like extend our gratitude and thanks to everyone at AstraZeneca for the work that has so far taken place and taking place twenty-four hours a day.

!00yearsofcoconuts have launched a project to collect supporter’s memories. If you would like to take part please visit the groups website for further details. It really is simple to complete and the group will add your replies to their website during the coming weeks. See the linkhttps://tinyurl.com/y4l896xk

They are also looking for supporters to write articles for the website about Cambridge United. If you would like to do so please email 100yearsofcoconuts@gmail.com

There have been a lot of changes at Cambridge Fans United during recent weeks with new board members joining. I would like start by saying thank you and show my appreciation to Robert Osbourn who has now stood down as Chair due to ill health. He has helped me a lot over the years and has always been supportive of the ideas I have come up with. I hope everything gets back on track soon for him and he is back to full fitness soon.

I would also like to wish Andrew Stephen and Ben Phillips success with their plans in the future. CFU is coming up to being 21 years old this year. It needs to be representative of all supporters and members. During those years Supporters Trusts have had to change and adapt to different situations. Now there so many more ways and possibilities for representing and helping supporters. Find out more about the work that other supporters’ groups and trusts are undertaking by visiting the Football Supporters Association website https://thefsa.org.uk/ It was the groups AGM in December and the round up can be found here https://thefsa.org.uk/

Take care and look after yourselves.

Andrew Stephen - Hot off the Habbin Bradford City Programme article

Hot off the Habbin Bradford City

“For me, football always meant that we came together as a family ,and in the Summer we played football outside” Claudia Schiffer.

I am told by my Nottingham based research assistant that the last time we were top of this division in January was probably in the 98-99 season. Martin Butler was top scorer and I’d had the added joy of seeing us draw 3-3 at Forest in the Worthington Cup, just down the road from where I lived at the time. Sadly, we lost the last game of the season at home to Brentford and finished second behind them but the ever popular Roy MacFarland had given us a season to remember. It was also during this season that today’s opponents, Bradford City, were promoted to the Premier League.

And now we are top again ,and deservedly so. It is always good to beat Southend, not least because of the jiggery pokery over the postponement which reeked a little of gamesmanship. We had to play into the teeth of a gale in the first half and produced a very professional performance in the second half to take the points. Social media was alive at times with claims that the wheels have come off and Bonner should be sacked. Well, we are only top . Like many others I think of Simon Dobbin whenever we play Southend. I met him just the once before the game on the fateful day he was attacked. He was delighted to be at the game and was really enjoying that sense of camaraderie which is such a special part of going to an away game. Of course I don’t feel vindictive towards Southend FC because of what happened. They and their supporters were as appalled by what happened as the rest of us.

And every time I think of Bradford City, I think of the dreadful fire at Valley Parade that killed so many. What I learned from that and from what happened at Southend is that the football family is not just a well intended myth. Most of us love the rivalry but , beyond that, we appreciate and respect each other for what we have in common. At its best, football is a unique force for good. And don’t we need it.

It has been an awful year. Covid has dominated our lives and the list of those fans we’ve lost is a reminder that, however brief a life we may have, we all matter to each other. The Stephen family has just lost a close family member, known to many who have stood for years on the Habbin.. Bill Shankly knew when he light heartedly claimed that football is more important than life and death, that looking out for each other will always matter more.

Andrew Stephen

Cambridge United Elite Scholars Support Mental Health Awareness

Cambridge United Elite Scholars Support Mental Health Awareness

Cambridge United Elite Scholars are covering the distance from Land's End to John O'Groats in a virtual challenge to raise awareness of Mental Health issues. That's 874 miles or 1,406 kilometres in just four weeks!

Cambridge Regional College Sports Lecturer, Tom Hall said, “Lockdown has had a significant impact on the scholars as their training and fixtures have been put on hold during the pandemic. We wanted to encourage the squads to stay active, be positive and do something to help people that may be struggling with their mental health during lockdown. As a team, they can pull together to complete this challenge while raising funds for two great causes.”
Picture
The Scholars are supporting two local charities close to their hearts: CPSL Mind (Cambridgeshire, Peterborough & South Lincolnshire) and Cambridge United Community Trust.

Tom added, “These two charities work together on a mental health football initiative to support individuals struggling with their mental health. The football sessions provide the opportunity for people to come together and improve their mental wellbeing through football.”

The team initially set themselves a target of £874, £1 for each mile covered, but after just one week they have far exceeded this. If you would like to make a donation please visit, https://cuctrust.enthuse.com/cf/lands-end-to-john-o-groats-challenge.

Mind CPSL promote positive wellbeing across our communities and they campaign against the stigma & discrimination faced by so many people experiencing mental health challenges.

The Community Trust use the power of sport and the brand of Cambridge United FC to empower the local community and change lives.

Cambridge Fans United appoint Ben Phillips as Vice Chair

9/1/2021

Picture
I feel privileged to have been elected as the new vice chair of CFU and am looking forward to working alongside Andrew Stephens as the new chair & the rest of the supporters’ trust. I have thought that CFU has been dormant in recent times as the voice of the club’s fan base, and want to actively change the perception of CFU & CUSP that fans currently have.

It’s great to see lots of organisations for fans in the current day as well as CFU, such as CUSP, UTAS, Coconuts & the Supporters’ Club. I am looking forward to building relationships with all of these so we can become stronger and more proactive, working as one for the fans of Cambridge United.

The heartbeat of a football club is its fan base and without fans a football club is nothing. In the current climate & modern day, it’s important, more now than ever for a football club and organisations attached to it, to communicate efficiently with you the fans. I feel this is something that the football club has started to improve on massively within the last 12 months: in particular, things like the new match day live media show and digital programmes online, keeping fans engaged and communicating with them during the pandemic while they sadly can’t attend fixtures in what has been a challenging time for everyone.

As an organisation that is supposedly the voice of the fans, I would like fans to realise that CFU as a group are approachable on a match day and are willing to help fans with their problems or suggestions they may have supporting our club. We will be actively looking to improve the match day experience for all fans of all backgrounds, young and old that visit the Abbey Stadium. The CFU & CUSP Committee members will work at becoming more visible & approachable for fans on a match day too.

One of the things I am passionate about is ensuring we have a football club for generations to come. I would like CFU to help work closely in a relationship with the football club with this vision in a number of different ways. In particular working with the club & the Community Trust at creating a visual brand within our city, showing Cambridge United as the football club that is welcoming to everyone & at the heart of the community.

Growing up, as a Junior U member it’s one of the things as a youngster that got me in love with Cambridge United. Therefore I would like to see the resurrection of Junior U’s so we can have future generations of fans experiencing the same feeling about their local football club  as they grow up.

CFU itself needs to become more diverse and inclusive. It would be nice to see more young people involved and I think we need to be engaging with our younger fans more as they are the future of the football club. Our membership does not accurately reflect the full spectrum of ages, views and cultures which make up our society from which hopefully lifelong fans will come.

Most of all we have to increase membership by giving people a reason to join without waiting for the crisis which we all hope never comes. I hope that we can represent all supporters fairly and with integrity and that OUR voice in the club is listened to because it is respected.

A Word From the Chairman

7/1/2021

Below Andrew Stephen begins to provide his thoughts on the future of Cambridge Fans United
Picture
Having been an avid Cambridge United fan since 1967, I feel honoured and privileged to have been elected as the new Chairman of CFU. This is an important time in the history of CFU, which seeks to redefine its role for the future, to represent supporters better and to overcome past divisions.

I am delighted that there are a number of different supporters’ organisations and a flourishing fanzine. I don’t see them as rivals. Supporters are the lifeblood of any club. Indeed there would be no point in a club without them. The role of a fans’ organisation is to keep the lines of communication between fans and club open and clear. CFU’s role historically has been clearer whenever there has been a crisis at the club. There have been a few of those. But our role is far more important than that of firefighting. The term “critical friend” is disliked by many because it is so easily misused and misunderstood. People who have the task of running football clubs or any other large organisation are concentrating on the things which have to be done. They may well be grateful to others who point out other things that could or should be done. Things which can easily be missed in the hurly burly of financial survival and which, perhaps, our volunteers can help with.

CFU has two huge advantages over other fans organisations; significant financial clout and a permanent voice on the Board. These can only be effectively used if CFU are fully in touch with their members’ concerns and clear about its own identity and objectives.
One of our chief roles in the future has to be making sure that the needs of all supporters are met by the club in order to encourage greater diversity and inclusion. All supporters should be able to feel welcome and safe  at the Abbey Stadium and the elderly, the unemployed, those with special needs and the vulnerable may need provision which goes beyond that which football clubs usually provide. Identifying these needs and making proposals for new provision are obvious ways in which CFU can help the club and our fans.

In addition, CFU itself needs to become more diverse and inclusive. We have far too few young people amongst our members. Our membership does not accurately reflect the full spectrum of ages, views and cultures which make up our society. We need to consider different types and prices for memberships to suit whatever involvement people seek. We must establish better relationships with the Supporters’ Club and encourage more women to take on more leading roles….a strange thing to have to say in this day and age! Most of all we have to increase membership by giving people a reason to join without waiting for the crisis which we all hope never comes. I hope that we can represent all supporters fairly and with integrity and that OUR voice in the club is listened to because it is respected.

Help with iFollow

CFU have provided the following advice and assistance concerning iFollow. We cannot guarantee that all of the advice will work as everyone has different devices, broadband suppliers and contracts.

However, the information we have obtained is from different sources and will hopefully assist you. You can also download the information via the attachment at the foot of the article.

First steps - Registering for iFollow

  • Log into your www.cufcdirect.co.uk account or register for an account if you do not have one.
  • Confirm the access to CUFC Direct is the same as the one being used for accessing the club website.
  • You can edit your personal details by clicking on the My account like on the top of the screen on the right hand side.  Using the edit screen button. Confirm your details are correct and amend if required

You will see the following.  We recommend you sign on at least 30 minutes before the match to avoid the last minute sign on rush and problems. This will also provide you a with a  chance to ensure you can obtain the service

Problems connecting to iFollow via your laptop
Having problems connecting to iFollow on your laptop?  Here a few tips:
  • Try turning your broadband/Wi-Fi off for 2 minutes to clear the cache about an hour before the match.
  • Restart your laptop
  • You can connect via Wi-Fi or you can plug an ethernet cable directly into your router and laptop.
Connect to iFollow
  • If you are having trouble connecting try changing your browser. You can use Chrome (although a lot of people have reported they have buffering with this) Firefox, Microsoft Edge or Dolphin or try any other browser.
  • If you have an Amazon firestick you use Silk
  • Check your broadband speed:
    • Type “broadband speed test” in your browser (Chrome, Edge etc or use Google)
    • Select “run speed test”. The test will take under a minute, you are looking for a download speed greater than 20Mbs for a reasonable viewing experience.

Once iFollow is working

Once you have the iFollow working click on the setting cog at the bottom right of the screen.  You will have two things come up: quality and audio.

Click on quality if you have buffering issues (when the action stops or the picture goes blank and you see a rotating circle) then change from “auto” to 504 (there are two 504's you need to top one) or one of the other numbers. The bigger the number the better the quality, so try different settings to get the best picture.
Picture
Picture
Click on audio (this is the commentary) you can chose home or away, if we are at home click on home and if we are away click on the away unless of course you want to listen to our opponents commentary. Note that the commentary often doesn’t start until just before (or occasionally after) the match starts, and there are adverts before and at half time when the commentary disappears. There have been occasions when the audio has been of the wrong Cambridgeshire team!

 Smart Televisions

If supporters are using one of the newest Smart TV models-
  • they may be able to simply use "screen mirroring" from their phone or tablet over Wi-Fi.
  • Some of the latest Smart TVs are actually computers, and using the TV remote, you may be able to access the internet using the built-in browser and going to https://www.cambridge-united.co.uk and iFollow directly via the device.
  • For those with Apple devices, iPhone, iPad, iTouch with iOS 11.4 or later, and Mac with macOS Mojave 10.14.5 or later, you can use direct “screen mirroring” providing the Smart TV has Airplay 2.

Watching iFollow on Apple devices

For those with Apple devices, iPhone, iPad and iTouch with iOS 11.4 or later, and Mac with macOS Mojave 10.14.5 or later, users can “screen mirror” (stream video) from iFollow to your TV via an Apple TV box, noting that you need Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, via Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation) boxes contented to your TV by HDMI cable.

Other things we have found
  • You cannot use the same code on multiple devices.
  • When you are watching you can “pause” or “rewind”:
    • Hover the mouse in the bottom left corner of the picture and select “back 10 seconds”, “Pause” or “forward 10 seconds”/”Live”. (the last will depend on whether you are watching a live game or a recording)
    • For a recording you can use the slide bar at the bottom of the picture to move the action to a particular time
  • If you missed the game you can watch the whole game later by going to iFollow and selecting “Latest Videos”
  • Check your Wi-Fi reception and speed before accessing iFollow
  • Wi-Fi speeds are not the same and slower than Broadband speeds, and dependent upon many factors, reception, location, signal strength and distance between router and device.  Best to have device as close as possible to router
  • If accessing iFollow via a laptop, connect laptop to router using an ethernet cable for best Broadband speed.

Taking the Knee  - CFU Statement

16/12/2020

Picture
CFU are disgusted that a small number of people booed players taking the knee at the match against Colchester on the 15th December.

CFU reaffirms our clear and unequivocal opposition to racism and all forms of discrimination.

The group will support any action taken by Cambridge United against those involved.

We would like to also thank the vast majority of supporters
who applauded  in support of the players.

Below is the Football Supporters Association  statement issued on the 7th December.

FSA statement: Players taking the knee

The FSA reaffirms our clear and unequivocal opposition to racism and all forms of discrimination.

We believe that football must offer a welcoming environment where every member of our communities can feel comfortable and valued, and we have welcomed and supported all initiatives in this direction, including players ‘taking the knee’ as their own demonstration of solidarity with those suffering racism and discrimination.

Regardless of the stated intentions of some of those booing the players at Millwall and elsewhere this weekend, the impact of that booing has undermined the anti-racist stance and created a much less welcoming atmosphere in the ground – it has had a racist impact.

The FSA will continue to work with our partners at Kick It Out, with others in football, and particularly with supporters up and down the country to combat racism and discrimination.

EFL Press release 18th June 2020
The EFL and its Clubs will stand together in solidarity against racial discrimination through a powerful online video campaign to say we don’t and will not accept prejudice, not today or any day.
Players from EFL Clubs returning to play this week will take part in the videos that will be issued across multiple platforms, to demand more from each other; more inclusion, respect and equality and offer support to our colleagues, friends and members of the wider community who continue to be subjected to unacceptable forms of discrimination.
In addition to the video campaign, the League will support players who wish to ‘take a knee’ before or during matches in support of the Black Lives Matter message.

With over 15 million followers across social channels of Clubs and players involved, EFL football provides an important platform to reach fans and the general public and drive positive change through the game and our wider communities.

The EFL believes this time it must be different for all of us, we all want change and we all need to play our part and supporters are encouraged to stand with EFL players to unite and celebrate our diversity and share the videos across their own channels to take action and speak out.
The EFL has a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination and prejudiced behaviour in all forms and stands alongside players, Clubs, the Premier League, the FA, PFA, LMA, PGMOL and all those who oppose discrimination.
We are committed to promoting diversity and providing equal opportunities for all and work will continue to develop processes and procedures to address these issues.
EFL Chairman, Rick Parry, said: “There is no place for racism in society and the EFL is committed to working collaboratively to eradicate prejudiced behaviour at all levels.
“The EFL has a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination but we need to do more to drive change by learning from past mistakes and lead from the front in speaking out against racism and discrimination of any kind.
“Football has the power to unite, and we must come together to challenge discrimination and celebrate diversity in order to improve and change attitudes throughout the game.”
The content will be released prior to games kicking-off.
In addition to this activity taking place, the EFL will also say thank you to NHS key workers at fixtures across this weekend.
Players will wear shirts featuring an ‘NHS Rainbow – Thank You’ emblem and a period of applause will take place prior to all matches from 18-21 June 2020, as Clubs and players collectively display their gratitude for those working on the frontline.
Clubs will also show their continued support through their own media channels and through various in- stadia displays during the selected fixtures.

The Non-League Groundhopper's Diary by Alan Burge

10/12/2020

Picture
During recent years Alan Burge has painted his way around most of the Abbey Stadium and has supported Cambridge United for over 50 years. During this time he has followed the team the length and breadth of the country.

One of his hobbies is photography and you will have probably seen many of his photos of the Abbey Stadium.

Being also a  supporter of non-league football Alan is a ground hopper visiting as many non league grounds as possible whenever he can. While doing this he has written reports about the grounds visited.  Some of these grounds and clubs sadly no longer exist.

He comments "I used to travel to non league grounds when the Us were away and take photos of each one. I wrote about my visits and each one appeared in the Non League Magazine as a ‘Diary"

Unfortunately, the magazine had to close down and decided to turn his writings from each month into a book

The book can be purchased via the Amazon link here www.amazon.co.uk/Non-League-Groundhoppers-Diary/dp/B08M2LLC9Q
