Ralph's mother introduced him to the Abbey Stadium. His grandfather with the same name, had a grocer's shop on the corner of Leek Street and Newmarket Road and his mum who was a real sports fan, including football, so on occasionally take Ralph to a match
As a teenager he watched the matches with his friend Peter Woor. They were both apprentices at Heffer's printers attending matches regularly at home. Unable at the time to afford to go to away games.
Charles Heffer was a director of the Us at the time and Heffers printed the match programmes.
He thought it would be good to collect club badges for all the teams in that league.
