An unprecedented third place at the competition in Canada last month grabbed the headlines and boosted awareness of the game to a wider audience, with an estimated 1.4million people watching the decisive 1-0 win over Germany on television.
If there was ever a time to capitalise on the growth of interest in women's football it is now – and Cambridge United have done just that.
A deal was recently struck that saw Cambridge Women FC come under the United banner, and there was a decent-sized crowd for their curtain-raising friendly against Queen's Park Rangers at the Abbey last month.
