Robbie Simpson speaking after Barnet Match

Robbie Simpson speaking after Barnet Match

Picture

Gaining even a point was crucial for Cambridge United from Saturday's goalless draw at Barnet, according to Robbie Simpson. (Cambridge News Story)

After last weekend's 3-0 reverse at home to Crawley, Simpson felt a positive response was needed against the Bees.

He said: "That was the main thing. We were easy to score against last week and we were all over the place.

"We were shocked ourselves, as players, at how bad we were, but this was all about getting together, not getting beaten. And keeping a clean sheet was massive and we know we'll get better."

‘I feel lucky to be playing’, says Cambridge United keeper Chris Dunn after injury scare

After fearing a long spell on the sidelines, a buoyant Chris Dunn intends making the most of his escape from serious injury.

The Cambridge United goalkeeper suffered what was at first feared to be a damaged Achilles in the warm-up to last month's pre-season clash at home to Norwich City.

But Dunn was on the bench by the time the Sky Bet League Two season got under way with a 3-0 win at home to Newport County and has since played three matches.

Luke Chadwick aiming to give Cambridge United a fut-hold in mini version of the game

Luke Chadwick aiming to give Cambridge United a fut-hold in mini version of the game and watch one of my favourite ever United moments

Picture
Good close control, the ability to get out of a tight spot and the vision and skill to make a defence-splitting pass are all talents you would associate with Luke Chadwick.

But despite having all that in his locker, Chadwick has found himself having to control faster and think quicker after entering the world of futsal.

After being released by Cambridge United at the end of last season, the former Manchester United, Norwich and Milton Keynes Dons midfielder is concentrating on the only small-sided version of the sport to be officially recognised by Uefa and Fifa, as well as continuing to study for coaching qualifications.

Dave Doggett insists Cambridge United's Fans' Charter has had a positive effect

Picture
Cambridge United Fans’ Charter has made a difference, says Dave Doggett

Dave Doggett insists Cambridge United's Fans' Charter has had a positive effect on the matchday experience at the Abbey.

The guidelines for supporters' behaviour were launched jointly with Cambridge Fans United last month and United chairman Doggett felt there was a noticeable change in the atmosphere at the ground as a result.

His view comes despite admitting United had been reprimanded by the Football League for an incident that saw two people throw bottles on to the pitch in frustration at a refereeing decision during their season-opening 3-0 win against Newport County.

In his programme notes from last Saturday's 3-0 defeat to Crawley, Doggett warned the FA and the League could fine United or potentially close sections of the Abbey if there was a repeat of such an incident.

Next stop is Barnet - What does Martin Allen say about our players

Picture
Picture
Next stop for the Amber Army to visit is the Hive Stadium home of Barnet Town.

Which United side will turn up at the match the one that played Crawley last week or the one that played so  well against Wimbledon during the second half.

It will  be a chance to say hello again to a former U's player Tom Champion who was so integral in the side that won promotion and the FA Trophy at Wembley.  He will be remembered fondly by supporters for many years to come.

Another ex U who signed for Barnet during the summer is Michael Nelson a key figure in Richard Money's side last season.

Keith Keane could miss Cambridge United's trip to Barnet on Saturday due to illness.

The combative midfielder came off after just half an hour of last weekend's 3-0 defeat at home to Crawley.

Richard Money revealed Keane had been physically sick before the game, but had wanted to play and that had continued to feel unwell this week.

He said: "It wasn't until after the game we realised he was as bad as he was

The Enduring Mystery Of Crawley Town’s Far Eastern Connection

The Enduring Mystery Of Crawley Town’s Far Eastern Connection

Picture
Picture
When Crawley Town travelled to Old Trafford for an FA Cup Fifth Round match against Manchester United in February of 2011, those who made the long journey north from West Sussex might have been forgiven for believing that they were living a dream come true. Previous financial issues had pushed the club to the brink of closure, yet in the winter of four and a half years ago the team was disappearing into the distance at the top of the Football Conference with a expensively-assembled team that made a mockery of the very idea of a distinction between “league” & “non-league” football and playing the biggest football club in the land for a place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. The thing about dreams, however, is that most people wake up from them in the fullness of time.

Throughout the majority of the first decade of this century, Crawley Town Football Club became synonymous with mismanagement and a seemingly perpetual state of financial disarray. The club had first entered into administration at the end of the 1990s, but it was in the summer of 2006 that the club’s very existence – it was then under the ownership of the now notorious Majeed brothers – was first threatened. Rescued at the last minute, then run first by a group of directors led by Victor Marley and subsequently by a company called Prospect Estate Holdings Ltd, it was the announcement of Bruce Winfield in July 2010 that he and one Susan Carter had become majority shareholders of the club with substantial investment – some of which, it was almost cryptically added, had come from overseas – that really changed the future of the club.

Leon Legge tells his incredible footballing story

If you missed Leon Legge’s feature article in the official Match Day Programme on Saturday, don’t worry you can read it right here on Cambridge-United.co.uk now.

The former Brentford and Gillingham man reveals the story behind his fight with epilepsy as a young teenager desperate to make it in professional football, and the work he now undertakes to raise awareness for the condition.

Check out the story below:

Legge’s journey in professional football began at a later stage than most, with the central defender not making his Football League debut until the ripe age of 24 for Brentford in 2009, a world apart from the likes of team mates Luke Berry and Josh Coulson who made their first team debuts at 17 and 18-years old respectively.

His early development took a major blow when he discovered that he suffered from epilepsy following an incident at the age of 16-years old

Rory Gaffney set for a temporary move from Cambridge United

Picture
Rory Gaffney is set to go out on loan from Cambridge United once his recovery from a foot injury is complete.

The 25-year-old striker has endured a frustrating time since arriving at the Abbey from Limerick in January, picking up the knock just after reaching full fitness following a break after the League of Ireland season.

But while Gaffney, who has yet to make his debut, nears a return, chief executive Jez George said it was likely the Irishman would initially go out on loan.

Jeff Hughes returns in Cambridge United’s defeat to Wimbledon in Final Third Development League

Mark Bonner was satisfied with what he saw from Cambridge United's XI despite a 4-0 defeat at home to Wimbledon in their opening Final Third Development League game yesterday.

Jeff Hughes played 80 minutes as he bids to come back from the ankle problem that had ruled him out of the early stages of the campaign, while Gearoid Morrissey, Danny Carr and Jordan Slew also went close for United.

But a strong Dons side were able to take advantage of a youthful United defence to earn the win.

British Transport Police announce new "dry train" policies

24/8/2015

For information - British Transport Police announce new "dry train" policies

Picture
The Football Supporters’ Federation (FSF) opposes laws and rules which discriminate against fans and “dry trains” – where alcohol is banned – fall into that category. However, we also believe it’s vital that fans know the lay of the land and a recent change in BTP policy means those who are “obviously drunk” or try to “smuggle” alcohol onto dry trains will be refused travel.

Stephen Thomas (Assistant Chief Constable, BTP) explains more:
British Transport Police (BTP) and the train operating companies do not implement dry trains unless intelligence and previous experience indicates that it is absolutely necessary to prevent and reduce disorder. The decision to implement dry trains is not taken lightly or without real reasons for doing so - dry trains have a real impact on passengers - both football supporters and other passengers.

There will be a different approach to dry trains from BTP and the train operating companies this season with dry trains being properly enforced. This means that when there is a dry train, we will warn people about trying to conceal alcohol in an attempt to take it onto the train past the BTP and train operating company staff at the alcohol check point, in contravention of the drink prohibition imposed on the train.

JOIN THE RELAUNCHED CUFC LOTTERY TODAY!

Cambridge United and Cambridge Fans United relaunch Lottery

The club have today relaunched the official CUFC Lottery in conjunction with Cambridge Fans United, which gives supporters the chance to win two exciting cash prizes, up to a whopping £2,500 weekly jackpot!

Supporters can sign up for just £2 a week and enter their name to win the weekly cash prize which gives supporters the chance to win up to £500, as well as the weekly accumulator jackpot that can rollover up to £2,500.

Those signed up will receive their four digit number and if all four digits match either of the numbers drawn from the weekly draw or the weekly accumulator, the cash prizes are won. Meanwhile if two numbers match in the correct order then supporters will win a consolation £10.

With lottery memberships capped at 5,000, United supporter’s chances of winning the CUFC lottery are far greater than most other lottery prize funds, so what are you waiting for?

As well as entering their name into the draw to win a number of weekly cash prizes, those signed up to the CUFC Lottery will also pledge their support towards a number of extremely worthy causes, including CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) and the club itself.

A significant portion of weekly entries will be fed directly back into the club, with the funds earmarked by Chairman Dave Doggett towards improving the long and short-term fan experience for supporters at the Abbey Stadium.

The relaunched CUFC Lottery will now support local charity CRY, which has been working to reduce the frequency of sudden cardiac death, an issue that can be particularly prevalent in football. Patrons of the charity include five time Olympic rowing gold medallist Sir Steve Redgrave, with more information about the charity available at www.c-r-y.org.uk.

Previously contributions from the lottery have been made to the Addenbrookes charitable Trust, in particular the Rosie who continue to deliver state-of-the-art facilities, specialist staff, extra comforts and research.

Whilst Cambridge Fans United through its Lottery fund have also pledged money towards the Rowan Humberstone, a Cambridge based charity and arts centre that brings artists and learning-disabled people together in the production of fine artwork and crafts; while providing opportunities for self-expression and creative exploration.

Commenting on the re-launch, Cambridge United Chairman Dave Doggett said: “Cambridge Fans United is an integral part of our club and have made regular contributions both financially and through manpower to the club.

“The lottery is an opportunity for all supporters to win cash prizes whilst at the same time helping the club grow. Profits will go towards improving the fans experience in both the short and longer term.

“If the Sporting Village gets the go ahead at Trumpington we will begin to modernise the Abbey Stadium, and by joining the Lottery supporters can help the club continue to move forwards.”

Cambridge Fans United Chairman Dave Matthew-Jones added: "Cambridge Fans United are now Building for the Future. The re-development of the Abbey Stadium is at the forefront of the supporter group’s agenda now.

“We are determined that in the future the stadium is developed to ensure supporters have the highest standard of facilities possible. Everyone who joins the lottery will be helping us to achieve that target and also help the club carry on progressing both on and off the field"

Meanwhile Lottery Treasurer Brian Thorby said: “We are delighted with this exciting development for the lottery and the reinvested support of the club.

“As the official lottery of Cambridge United, it gives supporters not only a chance to win some great cash prizes but also pledge their support towards an extremely worthy cause within our local community, as well as exciting developments for those that visit the club in future.”

More information can be found at the official CUFC Lottery website, www.CUFCLottery.co.uk

Harrison Dunk says U’s will work hard to put things right

Cambridge United will be working hard to make amends after "letting the gaffer and the fans down" in Saturday's 3-0 home defeat to Crawley, according to Harrison Dunk.

The U's were off the boil against the Red Devils as two goals either side of half time from Roarie Deacon along with Gwion Edwards' late effort condemned them to their first Sky Bet League Two loss of the season.

Listen to Richard Money after the Crawley Match

Crawley came with a game plan, executed it and did a job on United at the Abbey on Saturday. A week of mixed fortunes for the U's.

Listen to Richard Money's reaction here to the match

Cambridge United suffered their first Sky Bet League Two defeat of the season at home to Crawley.

U's manager Richard Money made changes to his starting line-up once more, with six alterations to the team that started last Tuesday's 2-1 win at AFC Wimbledon.

Barry Corr, who picked up an injury near the end of that match, was ruled out and Josh Coulson was also not involved, while Greg Taylor, Jordan Slew, Robbie Simpson and Liam Hughes dropped to the bench.

Coming in were Elliot Omozusi, Harrison Dunk, Conor Newton, Luke Berry, Keith Keane and new loan signing Jacob Blyth, who arrived from Leicester yesterday.
