Match Report

Cambridge United Women celebrated their launch on Thursday night with a battling performance at home to QPR but it was not quite enough to avoid a 2-0 defeat.

First half goals from Kasha Petit and Jo Wilson secured the win for the Londoners, who created most of the meaningful chances once they had recovered from a stuttering start, in an entertaining pre-season friendly.

A decent crowd witnessed the match at the Abbey, with QPR's greater quality in the final third the only significant difference between the two teams.

Cambridge made the better start of the two teams and in the early stages QPR were penned in their own half.

Cambridge United Women manager Steve Edwards confident of the future after launch against QPR

Steve Edwards believes Cambridge United Women's launch at the Abbey last night can provide the springboard for a fantastic season and even more interest in the women's game locally.

A healthy crowd of 261 turned out at the Abbey to see United lose 2-0 to QPR and a spirited performance, and an enthusiastic response from the supporters made for a positive night for everyone associated with the team.

Sven-Göran Eriksson said "This is great news. They are very talented young footballers and we have the belief that they will progress. Find out more George Taft and watch him in action at the Abbey

Picture
Richard Money believes George Taft will be an asset to Cambridge United after joining on loan from Burton Albion.

The 22-year-old is comfortable playing as either a left-back or left-sided central defender and has moved to the Abbey Stadium on a six-month loan deal from the Brewers.

That gives a further boost to U's boss Money's defensive options and is pleased to have him on board.

Ahead of Saturday’s Memorial match in honour of former Cambridge United and Peterborough United legend Chris Turner, U’s Head of Recruitment Marc Tracy pens his memories of the great man.

“Chris Turner is and will always be a treasure in the hearts of so many football fans across Cambridgeshire. Not only was he a genius at ‘The Posh’ in his playing and management, he arguably provided one of the best days ever on 24th May 1992 with the unforgettable Play Off victory v Stockport at Wembley.

Defender Leon Legge sets sights on Cambridge United targets

Picture
Leon Legge wants to chip in with more goals for Cambridge United after netting a rare pre-season finish against Coventry City on Tuesday evening.

The defender headed in the only goal of the game as the U's defeated their League One opponents.

And while manager Richard Money may have brought Legge in for his defensive ability, the man himself is keen to boost United's prowess at the other end of the pitch – even going so far as to set himself a target for the season.

"We're hoping for a big crowd" -
Laura Baker and Lisa Grimes preview Cambridge United
WFC vs QPR Ladies:

Picture
Steve Edwards believes Cambridge United Women's launch match against QPR at the Abbey Stadium tonight can be a huge success on two fronts.

Cambridge Women merged with the U's in May and the renamed club get the opportunity to show off their skills to new supporters this evening (7.45pm kick off), ahead of the start of their FA Women's Premier League, South East Division One campaign on August 16.

And manager Edwards wants the fixture to be entertaining for the crowd as the women's game continues to enjoy a boost following England's run to the World Cup semi-finals earlier this year, as well as boosting their pre-season preparations.

Cambridge United 1 Coventry City 0: Abbey pitch could make U’s the pass masters By CambridgeNews  |  Posted: July 29, 2015

Richard Money hailed the quality of the Abbey Stadium playing surface after Cambridge United beat Coventry City 1-0 in last night's pre-season friendly.

Defender Leon Legge got the only goal of the game nine minutes before half time, which came after Barry Corr had seen an effort disallowed for offside.

Cambridge United 1 Coventry City 0: Leon Legge gets winner as U’s see off Sky Blues

Cambridge United got the better of Sky Bet League One side Coventry in their final home pre-season outing.

Keith Keane was handed his first appearance since joining the U's during the closed season having overcome a shoulder injury.

And the hugely experienced central midfielder, who came off at half time, was marking the start of his reacquaintance with U's manager Richard Money, the pair having linked up in the past at Luton.

Cambridge News preview

Cambridge United will crank up their pre-season preparations another notch with the visit of Coventry City tonight as the start of the new Sky Bet League Two campaign looms large on the horizon.

The Sky Blues are the U's penultimate opponents before the first league match against Newport on August 8, with this Saturday's trip to Peterborough being their final run-out before the big kick-off.

And United manager Richard Money is looking forward to his squad getting another good test following the recent friendly duels against Norwich and Ipswich at the Abbey, as well as Saturday's 1-1 draw at Bromley.

"I certainly feel the Ipswich game was a proper test, and the Norwich game was different because we had to play two 60-minute games against two Norwich first teams which made the second match difficult," said Money, who could give midfielder Keith Keane is his first run-out after recovering from a shoulder injury.

Bromley 1 Cambridge United 1: Richard Money makes case for U's defence

Richard Money felt playing a three-man defence in Cambridge United's 1-1 draw at Bromley on Saturday was a useful experiment.

Josh Coulson, Mark Roberts and Leon Legge alternated across the backline throughout the friendly, with Greg Taylor and Elliot Omozusi playing as wing-backs.

The only goal conceded by United came after Coulson was harshly judged to have handled the ball for a penalty tucked away by Alex Wall nine minutes from time.

Tony Mowbray hopes to have a new striker in his Coventry City squad for Tuesday night’s friendly match at Cambridge United.

If everything drops into place, two more loan players could be on board when the Sky Blues complete their pre-season programme against Oxford United at Nuneaton Town’s newly-renamed A1 Gas Force Arena.

The Bala Sport Community Share Offer has been extended and is now on Crowd Funder with rewards.

If you would like to help us bring Fairtrade sports balls into mainstream sports and recreation, and ensure a better livelihood for those who work to produce them you can become a shareholder in Bala Sport. Our minimum target amount of £50,000 was exceeded (£72,620 was raised in just 12 weeks). Watch the video below -

This brand new co-operative style organisation was set up to expand the availability and use of ethically produced Fairtrade sports balls (focusing initially on footballs) in the UK and beyond.

The Fairtrade Mark is the most widely recognised ethical label globally and trusted by 89% of UK consumers. A key role of this co-operative is to raise awareness of the issues around Fairtrade sports balls and how they help make a difference in the lives of some of the estimated 40,000 workers in Sialkot, Pakistan (where around 70% of the world’s hand-stitched balls are made).

When a high quality Fairtrade certified football is sold in the UK the buyer is guaranteed that the men and women who made these hand stitched products are paid a fair wage and benefit from fair working conditions and also the additional Fairtrade Premium.

This is a cash sum used for social, economic and environmental development projects decided upon through a democratic process and typically include free healthcare and educational projects for workers and their families and the wider community. Recent stats show that retail sales of Fairtrade certified products as a whole in the UK generated £23 million in Fairtrade Premium. This organisation will ensure that in future the amount benefiting sports ball workers in Pakistan will rise significantly.

LOCAL SUPPORTERS’ TRUSTS COME TOGETHER

Cambridge United play Peterborough on August 1st in a match to celebrate the life of Chris Turner and the work he did for both clubs in Cambridgeshire. The Peterborough Posh Trust and CFU have come together to help promote the goodwill that exists. We have worked together in the past promoting the Smile scheme and other supporter programmes.

LOCAL SUPPORTERS’ TRUSTS COME TOGETHER

The Supporters’ Trusts of Peterborough United and Cambridge United are working together ahead of the Chris Turner Memorial match, to be played at the ABAX Stadium on Saturday 1st August.

Posh Supporters’ Trust Chairman John Henson said ‘There has always been healthy rivalry between Peterborough United and Cambridge United. We miss our local derby, it was always a good day whenever we met. We want to come together with our friends at the Cambridge United Trust to celebrate the life of Chris Turner, who played for and managed both clubs’.

Details are being finalised but plans include joint charity bucket collections, and the production of a specially embroidered commemorative team shirt.

Chairman of Cambridge Fans United David Matthew-Jones added ‘We approached our friends at the Peterborough United Trust to discuss how we could work together to commemorate Chris Turner, and to support the charity proposed by his family, the Glenfield Care Centre. We plan to work together to make it a day to remember, for all the right reasons.’

Fans Charter

26/7/2015

Last week the Fans Charter was launched, we have attempted  below to explain the reasons for why and how CFU became involved.

Picture
Cambridge United and CFU have worked together to produce a fans' charter.  The aspiration is to make the Abbey Stadium a place where everyone is welcome and where everyone can enjoy the atmosphere.

We hope it is not just the supporters who will aim to follow the charter, but everyone who is involved at Cambridge United including the playing staff and employees. There cannot be one rule for supporters and another for others.

Customer care is also going to have its place at the club from now on. There are service level targets being introduced and procedures implemented. These should benefit all supporters going forward to improve their match day experience and every point of contact with the club.

We hope the Fans' Charter will become the basis that makes the Abbey Stadium an attractive place to come for all supporters, both existing and new.

It is not there to prevent freedom of speech; it is there to ensure everyone will be listened to.

It is not there to prevent supporting Cambridge United; it is there to encourage supporters.

It is not there to prevent anyone’s enjoyment. However, remember what one person considers acceptable, another can find offensive.

Most of the charter already exists in the Supporters' Conduct element of the Customer Charter, so by entering the ground everyone is already agreeing to abide by these rules.

We don’t want to see another Cambridge United supporter

·         banned from the ground and from matches

·         receive a Football Banning Order

·         go to court

·         face imprisonment

We also don’t want to see

·         another supporter failing to return home from a football match

·         any supporter injured

·         a player face abuse and deplorable language from his own supporter (as has unfortunately happened in the past)

·         players not wanting to play for the club or loanees asking to return to their parent clubs

·         homophobic or racist remarks made by supporters

The charter is not only for the supporters. It should be about everyone at the club who should show supporters respect, honesty and live by the same values as listed below. Supporters are also a team that comes together to perform on matchdays.

How did the charter come about?

Cambridge United and CFU have spoken in the past about a charter. However, it never came to fruition. Following certain events last season it seemed to be the right time to put something in place that would be a vision, a target. We may never get there, but a failure to try may mean the Customer Charter coming into effect more rigorously. Cambridge United has a care of duty to everyone and will act to ensure that it can perform that role.

CFU were approached by the club to be involved and took on the challenge. We knew it was not going to be universally popular and we also knew it would be almost impossible to present at a level for everyone to understand.

The charter is aimed so it can be understood by everyone.  It needs to be understood by a child or an adult; it needs to be understood by anyone, whatever their educational ability.

See below the Fans Charter Definitions:

FANS’ CHARTER

We, the fans, want the Abbey Stadium to be a place where:

•       we support the team for the full 90 minutes, whatever the performance or scoreline
We have always supported the side through good and bad times throughout the match. The words supporter and support go together. We should support the side if we are supporters. We need to be the team's 12th man every match for our own side and not for the opposition.

•       we encourage individuals and refrain from criticism
No one performs at their best if being constantly criticised or playing with fear. How would  you deal with constant criticism in your working environment or at college? Criticism can also be a form of bullying if it goes too far. Social media now allows everyone the chance to say something and be heard. If you are critical of someone, that individual in future has no need to speak to you.

•       we respect the opposition
Showing everyone respect does not mean that you cannot support your own team. Nowadays most football teams and supporters are working together throughout the week and are building relationships to improve the game and matchday experience for everyone. During the match however, there is no reason why our support should waver while we are still respectful of the opposition.
If we show disrespect, then what will we expect from other supporters and clubs?

•       we generate a noisy and passionate atmosphere through the support of our team to overawe our opponents
The supporters of Cambridge United have always been the team’s 12th man. We have supported the side and been on a journey that has seen the success of the past few years and our return to the league. We have been as important in that success as anyone and shown that by doing so anything is possible.

•       we contribute to a family-friendly environment
The future of Cambridge United depends on the success of attracting new supporters and families. To ensure this is achieved, the facilities the club offers  and the environment that exists will determine if first-time or existing supporters return. We have one chance to succeed and everything needs to be done to ensure that everyone’s visit is an enjoyable experience they want to repeat.

•       we refrain from unacceptable abusive language aimed at officials or players of either team
Please see the Customer Charter which clearly states that abusive, foul or racist language is not tolerated.  It should be no different between supporters and this also will not be tolerated.

•       we don’t tolerate discrimination of any kind, at any time
Discrimination of any type is wrong and should not be acceptable.

•       we welcome new fans in a friendly and positive atmosphere.
New supporters should be welcomed to the Abbey Stadium as you would welcome guests to your  own  home.

Below is sourced from the Clubs Customer Charter which can be found on line –

•       Supporters' Conduct

•       The Club strives to ensure that the Abbey Stadium is a safe and pleasant environment in which to watch professional football. The Club requests that supporters co-operate with this policy.

•       • Entry to the ground is subject to the Ground Regulations displayed upon entry

•       • Smoking is only permitted in designated areas of the ground

•       • Foul, abusive and racist language and behaviour will not be tolerated

•       • Anti-Social behaviour will not be tolerated

•       • Any problems should be reported to a Match Day Steward

•       • CCTV Cameras are in operation at the ground and may be used in accordance with Ground Regulation 16

•       Cambridge United Football Club in conjunction with Cambridgeshire Police have agreed guidelines of a policy to deal with any serious offences relating to supporter misconduct.

•       The Board of Directors of Cambridge United Football Club Limited will sanction all bans regarding supporters' conduct.

•       Period of Ban Offence (If convicted at Court)

•       Life Riot, Violent Disorder, Affray, Supplying Drugs, Any Assault, Obstructing Police, Resisting Arrest.

•       10 Years Racist chanting and abuse

•       5 Years Section 4 Public Order Offences, Criminal Damage, Possessing a weapon

•       3 Years Drunk and Disorderly behaviour, Possession of Drugs, Throwing of items

•       1 Year Section 5 Public Order Offences, Running onto the Pitch or perimeter track.

•       These are only guidelines and each case will be judged on the known facts. The action taken for any other anti-social behaviour which may fall outside of these policy guidelines will be determined following discussions between representatives of Cambridge United Football Club and Cambridgeshire Police.

•       Warning letters and or entrance restrictions may be placed upon supporters whose offences may fall outside the scope of the policy guidelines. Such entry restrictions may include the signing of an attendance register, purchase of a known seat in the Main Stand and the provision of a recent passport sized photograph.
