Looking for United Flags, Scarves, Banners and Shirts

We are looking for United Flags, Scarves, Banners and Shirts that canbe  used around the ground to provide more club identity and colour.

We can not promise they wont get damaged as they will mostly be outside and they may not be returned at the end of the project. The shirts do not have to be in perfect condition and nor do the scarves. They just need to United ones

We are looking to hang the majority of items in the South Habbin to create an area that looks used instead of being an empty terrace. If the South Stand is being used they will be taken down for that match

If you have any items tucked away please can you contact me via the form below

I am also looking for some garden benches. I can not collect however if are able to deliver, please contact me via the form below.

Looking for Shirts, banners, scarves & flags

The second draw is for the jackpot accumulator.

The jackpot is again drawn using the random number generator and, as with the weekly draw, the member holding the four digit number in the same order wins the jackpot amount.
If there is no winner the jackpot increases week by week by £50 until the maximum (currently £2500) is reached .

United cake day

Today has been the start of the World Cup, however,  it was also the begininng of the annual United Cake day.

Lisa, Ian's wife, kindly cooked a cake to cheer up everyone and bring the smile back after all the hard work of the past few weeks. Ian shared out what he hadn't eaten to to the team (see above photo). Thank you it was lovely

We found out this afternoon it was Mick's birthday and also Dave's. I don't think they are twins, however you can never be sure. Happy birthday to them both.

Today saw the continuation of clearing up the stadium, work on the pitch, rubbing down the bridge and clearing the weeds from the trackside..

Mick Radford also used his carpentry skils to make good some doors and the generator room window. See the photos. I have said before he isn't really a football supporter but comes along to help out. It is really good he can turn his hand at most things having been a maintenance man at one of the colleges before retiring.

Next week we have decided is going to be United Cookie Day :-)

Hitting the wall - but now a new challenge going forwards

13/6/2018

Picture
Today, felt like we had hit the wall.  It was a hard day. The equipment was now cleared and Ian could get back on the pitch with Mick. There was some disappointment as the floor sheeting was removed and the amount of clearing around the ground that still needing to be done.

But that is now the challenge. To return everything back to how it was before.

Supporter Peter Marsh kindly loaned the group a metal detector and we were able to use it in force today collecting ring pulls, screws, washers, clips and other items from around the car park and pitch areas.  Paul did most of it while Mick R and myself cleared up wherever we could.

Les continued with scrapping down the bridge. Emma with painting the Habbin panels and Jason providing a second coat on the gates started yesterday.

Brain (Ian's uncle) did the track weeding, while Brian T  continued rubbing down the old  windows, gates and doors around the areas of the old dressing rooms.

The Ivy has also now been removed from the flood light area in the corner by the Habbin / Supporters Club

Who is in the picture? The Supporters Club History

Picture
100yearsofcoconuts have run a story about the Marvellous Morgans, however can you help name everyone in the photo? I think it is sad how little about the history of the Supporters Club is known considering how and what a great & important part in the clubs history they have played.

Do you know anything about the clubs history or how it started?

Do you have any memories of the club in the past?

If so, email us via the contact form below

The Marvellous Morgans story is below -

In a certain row of the main stand on any match day, at least three Morgans, sometimes more, can be found sitting. None of them are related, at least not closely, and they originate from far-flung corners of these islands. There are a lot of them about and, predictably, Morgans loom large in the story of Cambridge United ...

The grass is returning and snow look has gone

Picture
Today, saw the green green grass start to reappear and the snow on pitch disappear. No blowers used this time :-)

Some of the work being carried out today.

Brian who is Ian's uncle has started to weed the trackside - grass seed has germinated and started to grow . needing to be cleared now to keep areas tidy.

Mick and I spent today clearing the car parks, Cut Throat Lane paths , behind the South Stand. We also did the the pitch following the contractors lifting the flooring to pick up anything falling on the ground. In particular can rings. We did find one penny. If you would like to claim it and have proof it is yours - please contact me by using a homing  pidgoen.

Les worked on the Cut Throat Lane bridge almost losing his scrapper at one point in the brook.

Pete was painting the yellow warning signs in the Main Stand, while Jason painted some of the safety gate  frames in advance of  putiing the panels back on.

On Sunday the Abbey Arms was hit by a vehicle and today the repair was looked at by Graham who did the
re-felting on the roof last year.

Clearing up after the concert and other work

Picture
There was a lot of work completed late into the evening on Sunday clearing up the arena after the concert last night by the contractors on site. Today the stage and fencing  started being taken down see the photos. The bins were cleared by Mick George and the toilets started being removed.

Hopefully the flooring covering the playing area will come up tomorrow morning.

Other works undertaken by the team. Les started scraping down the Habbin Bridge metalwork. Looking to finish and have it painted by next Tuesday. There is a lot of work involved.

Brian rubbed down the doors and windows on the front of the old dressing rooms at the Cut Throat Lane end ready to be painted

Pete painted the top coat on the wood being fitted onto the safety gates around the ground.
Mick and myself did some clearing up around the ground. He also dreamed of being on the stage playing his drums.

George Harris - The reason why I chose Cambridge United and not City. Why did you become Black & Amber?

10/6/2018

Picture
It's February 1970. I am looking forward to the World Cup and seeing England retain the trophy. My family had just moved from Wokingham (near Reading) to Shelford.

I was at Shelford school playing football in the playground. I am asked who I supported United or City. I remembered reading that George Harris had recently moved to United from Reading.

He was joined by Colin Meldrum who had also played for Reading and who went on to score the first league goal for United against Lincoln.

So George Harris is one of the reasons why I have supported the club for nearly 50 years.

What was the reason you did so? Was it a player, a match or an individual that made you become Black & Amber?

100yearsofcoconuts - Danny, champion of the Abbey -read the story or watch the film

An edited version of this article was published in the Cambridge United programme for the match against Accrington Stanley on 21 November 2015.

We’re aware at Coconuts Acres that we're sometimes guilty of focusing on the distant past of Cambridge United, at the expense of more recent history. In our defence, there are good reasons for that – the task of documenting earlier events is urgent, and we already have a satisfactory record of the recent past – but we sympathise with supporters who are eager to hear about their modern-day heroes.

That’s one reason good why we’re always delighted to welcome Danny Potter to the Abbey whether it's to field fans’ queries in a Q&A session or to pedal off on a marathon charity cycle ride. Another reason is that Danny is one of the nicest blokes you’ll ever meet, in football or any other sphere.

Non Concert work done this week

9/6/2018

Having completed the Amber painting of the panels at the rear of the Habbin North we have turned our attention to the ones painted black. These had not deteriorated/weathered as much as the yellow ones. Instead of painting them we cleaned them down with water. Work has now started on the panels at the south end of the stand with the panels being prepared for painting.

The main job that needed to be done during the week was to repair the walls and area affected by moving the shutter in the Premier Suite / Dublin Room in time for the functions on Thursday and Friday.

Les Weston and Mick Radford did a superb job in completing this work in the timescales needed.

Another job started needing completion before the season starts is an issue raised via the saftey inspection carried out. The panels on the gates around the pitchside are requiring change due to the current ones rotting and splitting. The new ones have been cut to size now and the first coats of paint done on new panels

100yearsofcoconuts - Facts and Figures - Abbey United 1913-1920

Picture
The publication of a complete statistical survey of Abbey/Cambridge United's century-plus history has long been one of 100 Years of Coconuts' central aims.

It's starting in a modest way but eventually this website will contain all the facts, figures and records any football statto or United fan could desire.

This venture has been made possible by the work of the late Andrew Bennett, whose later years were devoted to compiling the information that made possible the writing of Celery & Coconuts, the definitive history of Abbey/ Cambridge United (first two volumes on sale here). Despite Andrew's untimely death earlier this year, Coconuts will continue to publish Celery & Coconuts through its Lovely Bunch imprint.

Andrew's databases provide the most detailed examination of the club's history it's possible to imagine. Coconuts volunteers were staggered to discover just how much information he amassed. It's no exaggeration to say the task of collating and placing all this data in the public domain will take years. Please be patient.

Andrew Bennett: master of record-keeping

Eventually, you will be able to study all United's results, goalscorers, appearances and player records of days gone by.

They have started with the establishment of a new 'Data' page on the groups website and the publication of the first two full sets of Abbey United results: those from the 1913-14 and 1919-20 seasons. Head here and dig in.

The EFL’s Summer Conference 2018 has concluded, with a number of proposals formally adopted into EFL Regulations during its Annual General Meeting.

In total, 17 regulation amendments or additions were put forward by the EFL Board alongside one proposed resolution to amend the Articles of Association. Seventy-five per cent of the membership is required to pass a change in the Articles, whilst 50 per cent plus one of all Clubs and 50 per cent plus one of Championship Clubs is needed to effect a change in EFL regulations.

Prior to the formalities of the AGM, Clubs were provided with the conclusion to the Owners’ Conduct Review, which was introduced last year following a number of concerns in the area of Club ownership. This included three proposals as part of the 2018/19 regulatory changes.

The highlights of the 2018 AGM included:

Putting on the show - the work continues

Today, saw a great deal of work going on with the construction of the stage. In addition to that activity there were  other maintenance works taking place by everyone.

Below, the photos show some of the work carried out today.

Every space is being used on Sunday to guarantee the smooth running of the show. The programme hut was cleared to allow it to become the resource assembly location. The tables in the Abbey Arms needed to be moved to the areas being used as dressing rooms as were all the fold up tables we could source at the Abbey.

The accessible access at the south stand was cleared for there to be a clear pathway. There was no problem with access as during the season it is tended to regularly, however while clearing areas nearby we cleared either side again to make absolutely sure.

Ian and Paul Harrison cut the grass on the area that is still uncovered. The grass isnyoung and growing quickly in that area.

We also washed down all the turnstiles following last weeks sweep and clearing of rubbinsh in those areas. During the next few weeks we will be carrying out maintenance work on the roof of the Newmarket Road turnstiles to stop a leak. We will also be looking to remove any unused furniture in the turnstiles and reapir the dripping guttering at the Newmarket Road turnstiles.

Johnny Haasz 1934-2018

7/6/2018

Picture
All members of the Cambridge United family will be saddened to learn of the death on Saturday, June 2, at the age of 83, of legendary 1960s goalscorer Janos ‘Johnny’ Haasz.

For two seasons in the mid-60s, Johnny lit up the Abbey Stadium with levels of skill seldom seen at Southern League level, and some phenomenal goalscoring feats: his 63 goals in 87 appearances in all competitions is unlikely ever to be equalled.

He already had an extraordinary life story behind him when he arrived in Cambridge in August 1963. Born in Budapest on 7 July 1934, he grew into a talented and industrious inside forward who worked his way into the Hungarian first division, playing for the Air Force team Magyar Légierö against legendary figures like Ferenc Puskás and Nándor Hidegkuti

The bloody Hungarian uprising against Soviet rule of 1956 not only interrupted Johnny’s football career, it also caused huge upheaval in his personal life. With other guerrilla fighters battling Soviet forces intent on crushing the revolution, he took on some tanks. Just nine of the 200 fighters survived, and Johnny was forced to go on the run, at one point hiding in an occupied coffin.

Morocco's Herve Renard was once the manager of Cambridge United.

6/6/2018

Picture
Morocco head coach Herve Renard was once in charge of Cambridge United. With the help of former players and staff, Adam Bate finds out about the two-time Africa Cup of Nations winner's nine months in League Two and why his subsequent success is no shock.

There will be only two head coaches at the World Cup who have also managed in the Premier League and both Gareth Southgate and Roberto Martinez suffered relegation from the competition. But there is a third man in Russia who can beat that. Morocco boss Herve Renard left Cambridge United with the club at the bottom of League Two back in 2004.

The 49-year-old Frenchman has achieved much since then. A shock winner of the Africa Cup of Nations with Zambia in 2012, he repeated the feat with Ivory Coast in 2015 and has since guided Morocco to their first World Cup in 20 years. So it seems incongruous that his time at Cambridge ended in the sack - and relegation from the Football League just months later.

An edited version of this article appeared in the Cambridge United matchday programme for the game against Mansfield on 19 December 2015.

It’s amazing what you find when you’re not really looking. A routine trawl by Coconuts volunteers through some of the Abbey’s gloomier hidey-holes three years ago uncovered this rather battered and unburnished trophy.

We were puzzled at first, but as the Coconuts elves set to work with the Goddard’s Long Term Silver Polish (it’s got hallmarks and everything), we were delighted to discover it played a small but important role in the history of Cambridge United.

Behold the National Playing Fields Association Challenge Cup in all its dented glory. If you could read the inscription you would see it was presented by Lt Col JCW Francis MBE.

Ring any bells? John Clement Wolstan Francis, who died in 1978, was a nephew of the Henry Clement Francis who in 1931 gave Abbey United the land that would become the Abbey Stadium, and a cousin of Walter Maclaren Francis, one of the club’s first directors when a limited company was formed in 1950.

Nelson is looking for love and his perfect partner

It can be lonely for an owl protecting the pitch from other birds.

Poor old Nelson is feeling lonely and is looking for a partner to help him with his work as a bird scarer and provide company for him through the long days on the track side or sitting in the stand looking after the pitch.

It has got so bad that during the week he nearly flapped his wings and headed off in his search for his very own companion

He has been a real success during the past few weeks and we would like to get another one to try and keep birds off the pitch and from roosting in the stands

If you can help him find a partner for him please use the form below so we can ensure that there is compatibility  and a chance of there being a long term relationship and they could also help with his work

Otherwise we may have to try speed dating

Picture
Another week has ended and the work has continued. It will slow down now, so everything can get ready for the concert next week

See the photos for where we have got to in the Habbin and some more turnstile photographs.

Today,  we completed the first stage clean on the Habbin and South Stand areas turnstiles while completing the Habbin North Amber painting

The first group of photographs show the North Habbin work - the Amber painting has been completerd by the team and given two coats. We will wash down the black panels possibly next week.

The painting of the South Habbin panels will be started after the concert.

Les painted the South Habbin entrance earlier in the week - watch out for when we do they other two. Although they will be white there will be a little twist.

The second group of photographs are of the turnstiles behind the Habbin and South Stand areas. The work started on cleaning them this week. We hope to have them painted by the start of the season. Can you say where each one is situated.

I said last night I would like to put an old turnstile in the garden. I think someone thinks I am becoming a sad old man. But an Elliston does have something magic about it.

Finally, it was lovely to see a letter in the Cambridge News - It was really appreciated by everyone working at the ground. The volunteers and all the staff are really trying hard at the club to make the supporters experience the best it can.
