Floodlights need to be lowered

10/5/2019

Following recent changes in the law concerning the use of drones. Cambridge United have been advised that each of their floodlights will need to be lowered by 10 feet to comply with new regulations. In Rule 1912/4 the Aviation Flight Control Council have also determined that all structures over 50 feet high must have amber flashing lights fitted to them. These will need to remain on throughout matches.

Ian Darler Stadium Manager said " We will have to comply with the new laws and are currently exploring all options. The preferred one will require the top framework section of the pylon to be unbolted and removed in order to comply with the new regulation. The other option although higher in cost would be to dig underneath the structure and remove the pole shoes. Another concern with removing the top section will be the birds who with the current climate are nesting. Fortunately the club could do most themselves. The club would also need to confirm with the league that the first three matches of the next season are all played away but it depends on how the work flows and any negative elements.

Industry expert Ivor Coolicon said that " The AFC fully understand the problems that may be caused by the changes. However, the club needs to comply before the 31st November with the latest law changes. There will be no extension lead times allowed to meet the deadline.

When asked Mr Coolicon was unaware of how many other clubs could be affected by the changes, but did not think it would be more than half a dozen

The above was going to be this years April Fool's Day joke. We didn't use it because of the defeat against Colchester but thought it was worth sharing

The hard work begins again as the pitch renovation commences with scarifying

The season finishes and work on the pitch begins in earnest again to get it ready for the next one.

Today, the sand arrived and scarifying the pitch started. The scarifying will continue until next week to remove as much of the debris as possible from the surface. The work will go length ways, cross ways amd horizontally reducing the height until everything possible is removed. It is done multiple times. The more the better

See the photos from today - 3 large loads of sand was delivered first thing following a temporary road way being created for their arrival.

Mick Brown then worked all day on the tractor to make the first impressions on the pitch. Thank you to Ernest Doe for the equipment and instruction to use it.

Ian followed Mick with the drive on mower picking up the large chucks of debris that had been left on the surface

Paul Harrison and myself then followed Ian using the converted lawn mowers to continue the scarifying. The mowers were used to go up and down the pitch over and over again picking up debris.

See photos of some of the waste in the compound. This will be collected by the allotment holders to use as mulch and compost.

The video shows Ian instructing me how to use the machinery safely before letting me lose on the pitch. I created some wonderful patterns but very few straight lines. The bucket needed to be emptied every time we went up and back down the pitch

Lawn scarifiers use steel blades to cut out thatch; hence it is also known as de-thatching. ... Take scarifying a step further by letting the scarifier blades cut into the soil and you will open the soil surface and make an ideal seed bed for introducing new grass seed to your lawn.

In the months that followed the Manchester United match at Old Trafford on the 3rd February 2015, the club signed quite a few players while releasing many of the ones who contributed to the conference promotion and FA Trophy in the previous season.

How many do you remember still from the list above and who do you think made an impact while at the club?

Did all the changes have an impact on the finances of the club and were too many changes made to quickly?

Ho many were better than the ones we already had?

Preserved in Amber: Promotion celebrations, 29 April 1978 from the April Amber News

Be led by your dreams.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Preserved in Amber: Promotion celebrations, 29 April 1978 It’s like a game of Spot the U’s Legend. There’s a behatted Steve Spriggs, looking more than ever like the Artful Dodger. Lindsay ‘Wolfie’ Smith is there, as are Dave Stringer, Tom Finney, Alan Biley, Gordon Sweetzer and the shy, retiring Sammy Morgan. Director Tony Douglas seems to be pointing admiringly at Sweetzer’s magnificent moustache, while chairman David Ruston looks a little concerned. He need not have been. His club had just won promotion to Division Two for the first time in their short Football League history and they would stay there for six wonderful seasons. The celebrations followed United’s thrilling 2-1 win over Exeter on the last day of the 1977/78 season – a win that secured second place in the table behind Wrexham and ahead of Preston and, pleasingly, a Peterborough side that missed out on promotion. John Docherty’s team, who had gone into the game not knowing it was the gaffer’s birthday, needed nothing less than a victory to present him with promotion. They had lined up with Malcolm Webster in goal behind a tried-and-tested defence consisting.

of Trevor Howard, Stringer, Steve Fallon and Smith. Ahead of them was a blend of schemers and strikers featuring Spriggs, Jon Cozens, Ian Buckley, Finney, Sweetzer and Biley. There was no room in the starting line-up for Morgan, but he was destined to play a huge role in the day’s events. The Abbey was rocking that Saturday, although the official attendance of 8,741 was, surprisingly given how much was at stake, almost a thousand down on the figure for the previous Tuesday’s 1-0 win over the Welsh championselect. United were entitled to look back with satisfaction at a season in which they’d lost just one home match and drawn only three. But they started nervously and ceded control to Exeter, whose Cambridge-born keeper Richard Key had a memorable first half. He would have cause to recall the second period with a shudder.  United seemed more relaxed after the break but were forced to rethink when, first, Grecians striker Keith Bowker – who had played in black and amber the previous season – shot them ahead in the 62nd minute and then the injured Spriggs retired. His replacement was on a mission. Morgan’s first meaningful actions, as a high ball dropped into the box, were to smash Key into the net and then provide ref Stephen Bates with his name. ‘I had to make my presence felt up front,’ the Belfast-born wrecking ball explained later. ‘He was coming out, so I had to go in.’  The shaken keeper was understandably deprived of a little confidence, and he stayed firmly on his line as, 17 minutes from the end, another cross came in and Finney headed it home. He did make an effort, with three minutes left, to get to a Cozens corner, but it wasn’t nearly as effective as Fallon’s tremendous leap. In went the defender’s header to make the result 2-1 and cue the celebrations. ‘Magic!’ said the goalscorer. Key’s post-match comments were not recorded, but his thinking was evidently along the lines of ‘You have to get back on the horse that threw you.’ Preparing himself mentally for the task of facing Morgan in training, he signed for the U’s in time for the following season.

[Now that was a great season, wonderful players, great hair styles and a proper kit. Some reasonable music around too. I love nostalgia. Ed]
