What a difference a day made to the pitch - The Apprentice Groundsman

31/3/2018

Picture
Yesterday, the pitch looked brilliant from the stand. It remained that way until  the rain started to fall this afternoon and it was being played on.

On Wednesday it rained a lot during the day. Thursday night it rained again. During March there has been a lot of challenges. We have had snow, freezing temperatures and lots of rain. The pitch is now saturated and can not drain quickly enough. The water is sitting on the top unable to drain away

See the photos below and how it looked this after the match - they were taken when I left at about 6.15. If the match had begun at a later time it may been abandoned or postponed due to a waterlogged pitch

Unlike snow which you can move from the playing area, rain is different, You need it to drain away, lets hope we now have a period some warmer weather, sun and wind.

There is little else that can be done other  than making sure the drainage is clear and working.

A special pitch design is ready for the Crawley Match

29/3/2018

Picture
This week Ian and Mick have been working on a special pitch design for the match on Good Friday against Crawley.

See the slide show for the a sneak preview of the pitch. The photographs really don't show how good the cut makes the pitch look.

Once the design is worked out and the markers are in place it is a matter of cutting the grass to plan. The more you cut the areas the more pronounced the lines become

CFU information report - CUFC accounts filed today

29/3/2018

Picture
CFU notes that Cambridge United FC has today filed its accounts for 2016-17 [click here for report
https://beta.companieshouse.go v.uk/company/00482197/filing- history

]. We understand this is the minimum required by law.  Although the document does not include a profit and loss account, a quick CFU analysis suggests that the Club made a near £700,000 loss for the period – although this appears to have been covered by an increase in share capital.  This is worrying given that, at the last shareholders meeting in March 2017, officials forecast a modest trading profit for 2016-17.  The figures will, no doubt, be subject to further analysis and discussion at the 2018 shareholders meeting (the date of which has still to be confirmed by the Club).

CFU understands that the 2016-17 CUFC financial report to shareholders will be issued shortly.

Supporters may recall that CFU has been talking to Steve Chamberlain (CUFC Finance Director) about the information that is provided to shareholders ahead of the meeting in the report.  As he said he would, Steve has shared with CFU an outline draft version of the report.  Steve had previously undertaken to return the report to shareholders to the same level of detail that was routine up to 2013, since when only very basic detail has been provided.

The draft report that CFU has seen does, indeed, take that direction and includes additional information over and above that provided to shareholders of late.  The draft, however, does not include some key detail that CFU was keen to have reinstated, most notably information around gross transfer fees paid and received, and first team playing costs.  Although CFU has only asked for the same level of information that was previously included in the annual report to shareholders, Steve maintains that this detail is now considered sensitive and, accordingly, should be omitted from the report.  This is disappointing.  CFU considers that this will significantly restrict the ability of shareholders to fully understand business performance for the period concerned.  Steve has said that some further information, over and above that in the report, will be made available at the shareholders meeting.

CFU is currently collecting questions from United supporters, to be asked on their behalf at the shareholders meeting [see email form below to submit questions].  The full list of questions will be shared with the Club in advance of the meeting.

Find out what has been done and what is being planned to be completed

28/3/2018

Picture
Over the past six months, a small team of fan-volunteers has been working with Ian Darler and Mick Brown on a range of improvement jobs around the Abbey Stadium.

The team works to ensure the ground is cleaned after matches and is ready for the next game.

If you would like to find out what has been done and what is being planned for pre-season, come along to the Abbey Arms after the match against Crawley on Friday. We would like to explain what, how, where and why the work is being done.

Weather permitting, I will provide a tour of some areas of the stadium to show the work our team has carried out, and explain some of the issues we've faced.

Ian may possibly be able to attend for 10 minutes (pitch work allowing) to tell us about the next tasks the team faces: structural and maintenance work, and some carried out for cosmetic reasons.

Robert Osbourn, CFU Chair, and Pat Morgan, Chair of 100 Years of Coconuts, will be on hand to answer questions about their respective bodies.

Join us at 5pm in the Abbey Arms

Cambridge United FC Futsal record excellent win in Manchester in the FA Futsal National Super League

Cambridge United FC Futsal made the long trip north to Manchester on Sunday in the FA Futsal National Super League to face Manchester Futsal Club. Both teams had gone out of the Futsal FA Cup the previous weekend so were looking for a response.

Cambridge and Manchester know each other well, with both playing in the Super League North last season, Manchester finishing 2nd and United 4th whilst the Us beat Manchester at the Quarter Final stage of the Futsal FA Cup the season before in United’s inaugural season. Manchester Futsal Club have a long pedigree in the English game and are traditionally always very strong but United have enjoyed a good record in their previous meetings.

Frank Pettit - Pioneer and Mainstay of Abbey United Listen to his story

26/3/2018

Picture
Would Cambridge United exist today were it not for Frank Pettit? That's highly debatable. Treasurer of Abbey United from 1932 to 1950, Secretary in 1934 and 1935 and Chairman between 1939 and 1945 – and even, briefly, a player in 1924 – he almost single-handedly kept Abbey United alive during the war years. There was no alternative, he says, for if football had stopped at Newmarket Road the ground would have had to be sold.

In this recording Frank recalls his earliest attachment to the club, its rise from the Cambridgeshire League, the war years, the transition to professionalism, progress to the Football League and the reason for his departure in 1970.

Please listen to the tape recording of Frank's story on radio coconuts via the link
www.100yearsofcoconuts.co.uk/radio-coconuts.html

The tape was produced many years ago.
The quality in places is not very good, but the story is excellent

The NRE RE-PAINT photos from today - The Apprentice Groundsman

26/3/2018

Picture
On my arrival at the ground today I was amazed at the work done over the weekend on the NRE to turn it back to Amber.

With the morning sunshine on it the wall it was certainly impressive

I asked Alan Burge if he would take some photographs of the stand this afternoon after he and Mick Radford had finished painting the black paintwork on the lettering and at the ends.

Thank you to everyone who completed the work and see the photos below

Our good deed for the day

26/3/2018

Picture
Most football supporters can recall who they looked on as their favourite players when they first started watching. Luke Chadwick is no exception.

As a young U's fan looking on from the terraces in the late 80s/early 90s, his favourite player was Gary Clayton. He even had a signed photo of the man.

Sad to say, Luke lost the picture, as told the 100 Years of Coconuts crew when he was being filmed for Coconuts TV (see the results at the bottom of the page here).

What could we do for our patron to fill the gap in his life created by the loss of such a precious memento? Get in touch with Gary and ask him to sign a replacement, of course.

How many other sides and who are they?

24/3/2018

Picture
I don't have the answer, however here is a question for you.

Yesterday, was the anniversary of the Trophy Final at the new Wembley.

Today is the anniversary of the LDV Final against Blackpool played at Cardiff.

We also played at the old Wembley when the club beat Chesterfield.

How many other sides apart from the mighty U's have played in competition finals at the old Wembley, the new Wembley and Cardiff and have not played in the Premier League?

Cambridge United FC Futsal crash out of the FA Cup at the first time of asking.

It was 3rd vs 4th when National Super League sides Cambridge United FC Futsal hosted Birmingham Futsal Club in the first round of the Futsal FA Cup in unfamiliar surroundings. Due to scheduling, CUFC’s home cup tie had to be played at the University of Bedford. Given the teams involved from all tiers of English Futsal, United were somewhat unfortunate to draw top 3 side Birmingham Futsal Club at this first stage of the competition but the thrilling 5 – 5 draw the last time the two sides met gave the Us great confidence of securing a result going into the game. United were also looking to bounce back from the defeat against 2nd placed Helvecia the previous weekend.
