Two former Charlton players Bill Whittaker and Herbert Johnson played a large part in Cambridge United turning professional and its rise through the non-leagues during the fifties. Interestingly, they both played together in the 1947 FA Cup Final when Charlton beat Burnley 1-0. This final is also remembered for the ball bursting during the match. It was the second year running when the ball burst during the match. At the time it was blamed on the poor standard of leather available following the war. During March, Cambridge United helped sponsors A&R Haulage (UK) Ltd provide items for the people of war-torn Ukraine. Thank you to everyone who brought something to the ground on the two days. These have now been delivered to Romania. A raffle was also organised at the Shrewsbury match for a shirt. It raised £440 and will go to buying items. Phil Merwiak who helped with the raffle and supplied the flag for the players to walk out with is organising a fund raising event @ the Hat and Rabbit in Fulbourn towards the end. After losing his Great Grandad to cancer, Harry Austen aged 10 is completing a 10 mile walk this evening at the Abbey Stadium. The walk is in aid of Cancer Research UK the charity that helped his grandfather. The walk will take about 5 hours to complete and will start at Cambourne. If you would like to donate towards his walk see more details via the website Harry’s Giving Page | Cancer Research UK Giving Pages The last away match of the season against Sunderland is now on line for supporters to book a seat. If you want to use the coach, go to the Away Travel Shop tab on www.cambridgefansunited.org or ring 07591 111251, you can also email to reserve one cfuawaytravel@yahoo.com Away Travel is one project I have really enjoyed doing throughout the season. Working alongside Gina and Greys Coaches it has been a sharp learning curve. The Carlisle Away Travel group were really helpful at the beginning of the season offering advice on their scheme. Their assistance highlighted how different supporter groups can work together and help each other. As we prepare for the final away trip of the season where better to finish than by going to the Stadium of Light at Sunderland. I am pleased to report we have been able to run the scheme at almost breakeven. It is even more remarkable considering the number of supporters who had to cancel coming on trips due to Covid. We have been able to run the service to all the league matches, although some of the mid-week matches involved long distances, small numbers and large losses. The highlightof the season must be the trip to Newcastle in the FA Cup. In over fifty years of supporting Cambridge United I can not remember a better away day. Thank you to our sponsors East Sussex U’s, Worcester U’s and CUFCLottery. I would like to thank all our regular travellers and everyone who has used the service during the season. This afternoon we welcome the supporters, officials and playing staff of Morecambe to the Abbey Stadium. We also welcome our guests who are attending via the Cambridge United Community Trust. The trust has been doing some fantastic work locally especially over the past two years since Covid was first identified. Football clubs and Trusts are in a unique position to encourage and make changes in areas that affect everyday lives. They can also through education influence the behaviours that make society better.
Events have gone full circle during the past years. Many clubs were created via Working Men’s Clubs, church organisations or prominent industries. As clubs developed through the 19th century, they provided a local identity during a period of expansion which resulted from people migration and industrial revolution. Clubs were seen as a distraction from the toil and under-developed living and working conditions which many people had to tolerate. In some cases, it was to provide recreation as an alternative to the drinking culture of the time. The 3pm Saturday Kick Off was set as many factories closed at mid-day and this allowed workers the opportunity to take travel and take part in matches In 1986 a pilot scheme, ‘Football in the Community’ (FitC) was created to counter the social tension and issues of the time. It was given the following aims. · provide employment and training for unemployed people · promote close links between professional football clubs and the community · involve minority ethnic groups in social and recreational activities · attempt to prevent acts of hooliganism and vandalism · maximise the use of the facilities of the football clubs However, many clubs would see it as a way of identifying future players via the summer schools and other activities. During the late 1990’s Research was conducted on behalf of the Football Foundation leading to a number of recommendations including the development of independent community organisations and also a more holistic approach to community development and engagement. This had two consequences. The first was pointed out in a report commissioned by Supporters Direct and highlighted the need for separation between ‘the football club’ and its ‘community department’. It also highlighted a second. At the time the community department, focused more on income generation in order to survive than the needs of its community. Changes would take place to ensure that the football club would operate as a business, while the community department would be a corporate social responsibility arm. I remember going to Supporter Direct meetings in the 2000’s and hearing about schemes being run by other clubs like Notts County. The one that impressed me most at the time was Club is the Hub being run by Chesterfield. It was based on Crime Reduction, Sport, Neighbourhood Pride, Education, Business and Health. Its success would be based against local figures and social accounting. Through Supporters Direct, Supporter Trusts were able to ensure real changes were made. The Cambridge United Community Trust has grown and developed like many others have done from the early days of the Football in the Community scheme. Now, AFC Wimbledon supporters through the Dons Local Action Group, https://donslocalaction.org/ are taking community to the next level. Supporters Direct merged with the FSF in 2018 to become the FSA. However, the FSA are still ensuring the importance of one community in the Fans Led Review. When we spoke about the importance of community and being a community-based club less than 15 years ago it was a concept that many couldn’t see the point of. Nowadays, it is embraced and it’s importance welcomed The last two away matches of the season Wigan and Sunderland are now on line. Go to the Away Travel Shop tab on www.cambridgefansunited.org or ring 07591 111251 email cfuawaytravel@yahoo.com Finally, I am saddened to finish by having to report the recent death of Mark Stuart-Wood. Mark was one of CFU’s main contributors during the mid-late 2000’s and someone I could always bounce ideas off. Our thoughts are with his family at this time. I for one will miss his contributions and suggestions. This afternoon we welcome the supporters, officials and playing staff of MK Dons to the Abbey Stadium. Last weeks news about the Abbey Stadium freehold returning to the club was wonderful to read and hear. The hurt and pain of the original sale was immense and at the time it changed people lives forever. The guilt of allowing it to happen has always been there too. Hopefully, going forwards it will allow the club to feel whole again. We are all now able to focus on both the present and future without carrying past baggage any longer on our shoulders. We will always be indebted to those who have enabled it to happen and to Grosvenor Property UK for being such supported landlords over the years
The Fan Engagement Results were published on the 24th February. Last year we came third, this year we improved to finish second. Exeter once again finished top. If we or any club wish to top them it would require major changes. Therefore, I am really pleased with these results. Commenting on the best performing club Exeter City, Kevin Rye said, “Exeter City just keeps getting it right. It’s not just embedded in ownership, but in culture and attitude. That applies to most of the best performing clubs. But we mustn’t be complacent: if you don’t look after the culture, it dies, and a structure isn’t enough on its own.” This result along with the first Family Excellence report have been positive following covid, however, it is only a start and a lot of improvements can still be made. Fan Engagement has many different threads to it and we need to be constantly looking at improvements in each area, however small. Everything is possible. We are also receiving a lot of positive feedback from away supporters and clubs for our pre-match interaction with them. We are contacting clubs and their supporter groups wherever possible before and after every matches. We want to be known as a friendly and welcoming club. We want away supporters to come to the Abbey Stadium. The Fan Engagement Index for the 2020/2021 season was released by Think Fan Engagement, and it shows that the entire Premier League is struggling to break into the top-twenty, with only Everton present for the season. None of the six involved in the ill-fated European Super League project fared well during the Covid lockout. season that saw football experience what life would really be like without fans. Some clubs appear to be getting their houses in order in advance of what could be an independent regulator for English football following Tracy Crouch’s Fan Led Review: Liverpool and their biggest supporters’ group, Spirit of Shankly, are about to conclude a comprehensive agreement to lock-in structured Fan Engagement, with Manchester United reconfiguring theirs. In the 1990’s Cambridge United were one of the most proactive clubs with the introduction of the Cambridge United Supporters Association. Since 2000 the Supporters Trust CFU havw been in place. Fan Engagement has further strengthened with the recent introduction the Supporters Panel CUSP and Amber Belles. The communications and engagement supporters’ groups has over the years been positive. Everyone benefits from this dialogue. It really does need to be constructive and positive. The first Fan Engagement Index was published for 2018/2019 season, and scores clubs in the top four divisions of English Football using publicly available data on their Dialogue, Governance and Transparency in Fan Engagement. Clubs were also asked for their comment on the data collected and provide feedback. The full table for 2020/2021, including biggest risers and fallers, can be accessed at https://fanengagement.net and the full report can be accessed via https://fanengagement.net/fan-engagement-hub There’s also a special edition of the popular Fan Engagement Pod, available on Apple, Spotify, Acast, Amazon and all major platforms: https://fanengagement.net/fan-engagement-pod You can contact me via dave.matthew-jones@cambridge-united.co.uk or follow what is happening via the www.facebook.com/CambridgeUnitedFootballClub facebook site www.cambridgefansunited.org website or via twitter SLO@CambridgeUTD Be Loud, Be Proud and Be United. Please get behind the team on the pitch.
When the players of Cambridge United and Shrewsbury entered the pitch last Saturday, they were welcomed by a guard of honour waving flags.
Creating an abundance of colour, the flag wavers provided a sense of drama as the twenty-two players entered from the tunnel. Funded by the CUFCLottery join here www.cufclottery.co.uk to improve the pre-match atmosphere and match day experience of ball boys/girls and community groups when attending the match. There have been ten flags made Thank you to Les Weston for putting them all together This afternoon we welcome the supporters, officials and playing staff of Shrewsbury Town to the Abbey Stadium. I have always been intrigued by and enjoyed the story of how, for many years, Fred Davies would launch his coracle into the River Severn to retrieve footballs kicked over the stands at Town’s old stadium Gay Meadow. These are the stories that make football clubs so special and unique to their supporters. Every club has them. Cambridge United supporters can read more about their own story by reading and following 100yearsofcoconuts www.100yearsofcoconuts.co.uk.
Next week we will be celebrating International Women’s Day on the 8th March, this afternoon, we celebrate those involved in our history, the current day and hopefully the future We should start off by remembering Lily Harrison, Carol Looker and many others who helped the club reach the position they have. Lilly raised thousands of pounds during the days of both Abbey & Cambridge United. Carol would organise the coach travel and raffles to help the club she loved. These women have been the backbone of our club. Without their work, drive and dedication we would never have got to the level we have done. Both Lily and Carol are included in the clubs Hall of Fame. Last Sunday, I watched the Cambridge United Women’s team beat Norwich at the Abbey Stadium. To ensure the team continues a lot of work goes on behind the scenes by a group of volunteers, but there is one person I would like to highlight out of many is Liz Pamplin. Liz has been involved with Cambridge United Women’s Football Club since moving to Cambridge 22 years ago. Having finally hung up her boots after 500 games Liz is now part of the backroom staff assisting with many training and match day roles aka ‘balls, bibs and cones!!’ Over those years she has been club secretary, treasurer, welfare officer, kit manager sometime physio and more recently COVID officer. Men’s match days see her selling programmes or on working on the turnstiles – Liz says that when you love the game and the club means so much, it’s the least you can do, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. With the help of organisations like #hergametoo and the FSA (Football Supporters Association) I hope more and more women will come to watch or take part in the sport whatever their age. It is their right to enjoy the match day experience as much as any male. They should never suffer sexism or sexual abuse. It is wrong that they do and it should stop. Any form of discrimination at Cambridge United will be dealt with strongly and won’t be tolerated. Report it if it happens We also welcome today the players, families and coaches from the local girl’s colt sides. I hope when they are older and look back as adults, they won’t still be talking about the issues we do today. They are our future supporters and players. I hope they will leave every match with a positive experiences, happy memories and come back time and time again to the Abbey Level Playing Fields are also running the groups official Weeks of Action 2022 from Saturday 26 February to Sunday 13 March, they work with sports clubs, disabled supporters’ associations, governing bodies and other organisations. These weeks provide an annual period of inspiration and celebration of good access and inclusion at sports venues. During the past twelve months, Cambridge United have added Picturepath to our inclusion tools, as well as adding additional accessible bays in the South Stand, d’ring handles in the Main Stand, wet weather equipment and extra signage around the ground.
