Message from Jon Edney: Coordinator/Director, Cambridge City Foodbank:
Our job is to connect those who have enough to those who are in need of a helping hand. It is a simple as that.
We are so excited that the fans and supporters of Cambridge United want to give a helping hand and support us!
Do you know that every day there are people in Cambridge who run into a crisis and run out of money? It can happen to anyone that lives on low income and doesn’t have savings. We know, because at the Foodbank we get to meet them when they are referred to us to collect food. Everybody has their own story but the thing they have in common is that they are trying to do their best and managing the only way they know how. We also know how much they appreciate the helping hand we are able to give them through food boxes and electricity and gas top-ups. It helps them get by but it is only possible because of the generosity of the people of Cambridge and surrounding area.
The foodbank has 100 volunteers who work to collect food from public donations, sort and pack it and get it to those in need. We have about 120 agencies ranging from CAB (Citizen’s Advice Bureau) to housing associations, health clinics and those working with the homeless. They tell us who is really in need and we provide for them through your help.
This year we are promoting the Energy Voucher Scheme that allows us to help where a person can’t afford to feed the electricity or gas meter. Some people live and sleep in the same room to try to stay warm with a small electric fire. But when the meter runs out there is no heat or light and they can’t cook. We use donations of money to provide top ups for those in the most severe need.
Do you have enough? Do you want to help someone who needs a helping hand? Please support the Foodbank through a donation and/or food in the various collection points around the city such as in big supermarkets (click on image above for locations). If you want to donate food we are particularly in need or the following items:
Tinned meats (for eating hot e.g. meat pies, stews, minced beef, chicken in sauce etc.)
Small Salt (60g pot)
Small pepper (35g pot)
Cooking oil 500 ml or 1L max
Sponge puddings (must be long life)
Fruit juice 1 litre (must be long life)
Thank you for your heart of generosity.
