Cambridge United's play-off dream is over but, when the disappointment of Saturday has subsided, U's fans can reflect on the enormous progress made by the team since Shaun Derry's arrival at the Abbey.
The 7-0 thrashing of Morecambe a fortnight ago finally saw Derry's men showing their true colours and ruthlessly dispatching the opposition, something they had previously failed to do this season, much to the fans' frustration.
That momentum was maintained at Meadow Lane as United exposed Notts County's weaknesses from the start.
Derry's former club looked a very poor side, but the 2-1 win elevated Cambridge to eighth in the table and the play-offs began to look possible.
