Would it be too much to ask for an external door for the toilet blocks? I know we have one at the Abbey but without a handle on the inside........? Maybe then a little heater could make a visit less traumatic? After all, there are only 2 toilets usually and it is often such a tiny space- it wouldn’t cost much would it? I understand why owners might not want to have glass mirrors in toilets but surely there are modern alternatives? And don’t get me started on loo paper......
The best grounds I’ve visited have done their best to treat women as equals who have different needs. Friendly stewards making you feel safe and welcome. Female stewards to approach you with a smile and sense of humour when they need to search bags or, increasingly at away grounds, bodies!
Some away grounds seem positively hostile. The fans are openly abusive and the stewards dour and aggressive. I can’t help thinking the two things are connected. The best away ground we went to was on a very cold day. We were invited into their hospitality area and given cake and indoor toilets!!! Well done Carlisle United and less well done Manchester United.
Speaking of cake, catering at grounds is obviously quite varied too. At some grounds it barely exists – not good if you’ve travelled a long way and were relying on finding food at the ground! Our ground has improved considerably in the last year in this area. Consistently hot food and drinks are available before and during the game. If I was being ‘picky’ though, I’d suggest a bit more variety and maybe something a bit ‘greener’? Not everyone is seeking emergency carbohydrates!
