David Matthew-Jones Name: David Matthew-Jones
Position: CFU Chairman
Born: Wokingham, Berkshire
Date of Birth: 6th February 1959
First Supported Cambridge United March 1970

Everyone has a different reason for supporting a football team. My reason for supporting Cambridge United comes from the fact I was born in Wokingham. My family moved to Cambridge in 1970 and during one of my first days at Great Shelford Primary school I was asked which team I supported Cambridge United or City.

I had seen neither play, but remembered United signing two Reading players Colin Meldrum and George Harris not long before. Therefore, I said United and I have never regretted doing so.

My dad had a friend who was a season ticket holder and he took me to my first match. It was an evening match and I remember falling in love with the stadium, the atmosphere and the club. The excitement of seeing all the supporters and watching a match under floodlights had never been matched before. Nowadays, I still get a tingle when the floodlights are turned on for an evening match.

I have followed the U's since that day and seen both the good and bad times. The Ron Atkinson years in the early seventies and the Roy McFarland ones are my favourites. How many supporters can say they have been to Wembley and Cardiff to follow their team, their club.

I was one of the original members of CUSA in the nineties and have been with CFU since the beginning in 2000. CFU has grown in importance since then. It is forever evolving. New challenges. New goals.

I am now proud to be Chair of CFU. Every supporter is special and everything should be done to give him or her the best. They deserve the best team, the best customer service, the best match day experience. Managers, players, staff and directors will come and go. True supporters will only ever have one team in their heart. They will stay loyal till the day they die. They don't flit from one team to another.

Everyone is fully aware of the events that have seen this club fall on bad times, however, dwelling on it will do nothing. We need to look forwards positively. We need to look forwards with confidence. We need to believe we will succeed. If we all do this we will be successful.

One Cambridge, One United, One Cambridge United.
