I recently read about potential plans for the creation of a two tier Premier League with Celtic and Rangers joining. It was not however, agreed at this juncture (as with the previous occasions when this hare brained scheme has reared its ugly head). Sadly, with money and greed ruling all and everything in football, in particular at that level, I wonder how long it will be before it is being discussed again and accepted. We can then look forward to both Scottish clubs descending through the two leagues if their European performances are anything to go by. Notwithstanding the goalscoring machine that was Jan Vannegor of Hesselink in the Scottish Premier, now struggling to get a game at Hull having sought a more competitive (should that be lucrative?) platform for his talents.

Would Charlton, Norwich, Southampton, Leeds even Bradford City be excluded from the new Premier League system or would it be based on a franchise system? Whoever pays the most each year could enter. Bye Burnley, so long Blackburn, sayonara Wigan.

If created it would kill stone dead the dreams of many supporters and clubs to compete at the highest level. It would lead almost certainly to a closed shop excluding any smaller sized and resourced teams. Would a team from England relocate to the Republic of Ireland as was mooted for Wimbledon FC a few years ago? Would a team the size of Cambridge United be allowed into it, or anywhere near it?

The business of football needs to ensure that all clubs throughout the system survive, in football the grass roots are the lifeblood of the sport and I make no apology for mixing metaphors!

Last season we played Weymouth and Lewes in the Blue Square Premier. Now, both teams sit at the bottom of the Blue Square South facing severe financial problems and almost certain relegation further down the pyramid. There are still huge question marks over Chester surviving to end of this season at best. Money should, as it once did, flow throughout the game at all levels and competitions. Results and the will to succeed should determine what level a club plays at, not how big the pockets of its latest glory hunting dilettante owner are.

At present in this country we have teams that are small, local, and, in CUFCs case, perfectly formed, able to play against the biggest and wealthiest. Would we end up with a franchise system where only 40 odd teams are able to survive while the rest fall by the wayside and die?

Every club should be supporting each other. An excellent example being the recent helping hand given by Burnley to Accrington Stanley. If the top level allows the lower levels to crumble and fade away it will be morally unacceptable  and  will be the beginning of the end of football as a sport that hold a special place in the hearts of the people of this country.
