Started supporting Cambridge United in 1966, which caused minor family rift as my father and uncles all followed Cambridge City. I guess I was proven to have made a good choice. Followed the U’s home and away through the Southern league good times, including Eastern floodlight league. Of course I was also on the bus that toured Cambridge and surrounding area when the club finally got what it deserved, league football.
Actively followed the U’s through the first half of the league years including the first ever Sunday game, and clearing the snow from the pitch before a game or two.
Work and career stopped me attending as many games as I would have liked for several years, followed by actively playing flat green bowls for many years. But I always listened to the games when I could and checked every result as soon as it was published.
Life took another turn in the early nineties which enabled me to start following more closely again, but I had missed seeing some of the glory years. So it was to start watching slowly getting to where we are today, but even then we had some great years and promotions.
For the last ten years I have been a season ticket holder again with my wife Cheryl, and in recent years have attended every game home and away apart from weddings and illness.
Took semi-retirement in 2010 to start my consultancy, “ASSM” to deliver “Business Continuity Planning & Physical Asset Support Management” to help local businesses plan for sustainable futures.
So summing up a lifelong U’s fan, joining the fans trust board early 2011. I guess once a CUFC fanatic always a fanatic, hopefully being an active member of the trust; I will be able to help build a successful future for the club. One of my main drivers is to build successful relationships which enable successful business; we must never forget a thriving football club has to be a successful business. The relationship between the fans, the trust, club board, management team, and in particular the players has to be built on good faith and trust, I will endeavour to help build this relationship.
