During the past couple of years Cambridge United football club have become a MENTAL HEALTH aware football club.
The football club carry out extensive work in the community and with the club staff which was recently recognised and received an award
'MIND YOUR HEAD' MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVE LEAGUE TWO COMMUNITY PROJECT OF THE YEAR
So when the football club EFL mental health day was confirmed we took the opportunity to get as much publicity and awareness for mental health as possible.
Working alongside MIND the football club were given permission to create black and amber signs to highlight mental health awareness around the stadium
But what we could do was THIS
I had to fight depression for four years, sometimes working long days and nights and then next day having to pretend that nothing was wrong.
I don’t think people who have never suffered with depression can have any idea what it is like or understand that depression is constant. Some days it is not as bad as others but on a bad day it knocks you down before you can even get out of bed.
I have now thankfully recovered after one of the most challenging journeys in my life
SO WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP YOURSELF AND OTHERS
Look at it from a different angle???
What do you do if your car breaks down, Take it to a garage and get a mechanic to carry out a repair
What do you do if your electric goes off at home ??? call out an electrician and carry out the repair
So why when you are feeling low in yourself do you not ask for help, talk to a family member or friend , life is the most precious thing we all receive yet we don’t deal with the signs of a breakdown .
I was fortunate to have a number of friends come to my aid once I had been diagnosed and several had been through mental health issues themselves and they were the last people on earth that I would have imagined to suffer.
It is very hard to tell if a person is depressed unless they breakdown in front of you or find a way to tell you. Depression is not like a broken leg you don’t have a plaster cast on so people can see your injury.
If you know somebody who is going through a difficult time or have a slightest doubt about somebody who may be struggling REACH OUT. Even if you don’t think it will help. DO IT even if it makes you feel uncomfortable. Just ask are you okay? And then ask again are you really okay?
Let me tell you it is easy to dismiss the first are you okay but the second are you okay gives the person the opportunity to talk.
It is very important at this point in time with the world at war with Coronavirus to take care of our own mental health and personal health.
