Paul Carden Top Cambridge United Side

I was fortunate enough to play with a lot of good players at Cambridge United in my time there and I still keep in touch with a lot of them now. I manage Warrington Town in the Evostik premier with Mark Beesley who’s my assistant.

For my top Cambridge United team I will go with a 4-4-2 system as that’s what I liked to play in myself and a system I like now as a manager.

In Goal I’d have Shirley from Eastenders AKA Danny Potter not only because he was like a woman but with his died hair made him look her double - Potsy did really well for the club - he made important saves in big games but his distribution was outstanding, he had a wand of a left foot that we used to counter attack teams really well.

Right back would be Dan Gleeson - Gleese won’t mind me saying but with his attributes he should have played more league football than he did. Decent on the ball, athletic, a good 1v1 defender and good in the air - what every manager is looking for in a full back - maybe it was his banter that stopped him !

Left back would be Anthony Tonkin - the warrior as he used to like to be called - Tonks was a machine , fit, strong and quick, he would thrive on playing against quick wingers. Went on to have a good career in the league.

Centre halves would be Wayne Hatswell and Phil Bolland -

Complimented each other really well. Hats was the loud one who would organise and shout at players while Bolly was the quieter composed one - both were proper centre halves who would defend 1st though and would nail anyone anywhere but they could both play - Hats scored some great goals with his left foot and Bollys reading of the game and timing of tackles made them a great partnership.

Right wing would be Andy Parkinson - pace and goals made Parky stand out and in his 1st pre season at the club he showed his quality when he roasted a back 4 of internationals against Everton scoring 2 worldies! If it wasn’t for rupturing his cruciate after the 1st game of the season I firmly believe we would have won the league!

Left wing is a tough one as we had 2 in Robbie Willmott and Courtney Pitt but I’m going to go with Robbie for his goals that season at a young age. Robbie had electric pace and he could travel with the ball from one end of the pitch to the other in seconds. He had an eye for goal and scored some important ones in big games - should have done better with his career I feel.

Centre Mids - Jai Reason. Came in from Ipswich and put years off me as I had to do his running too! No....a great lad and a talented player who had a great range of passing who I formed a real understanding with with - another who I thought would have went on to get back in the league. Still playing and scoring goals in the National league.

His partner would be Rob Wollaston, there wouldn’t be many tackles put in with these 2 in centre mid but they were both quality - this lad was a real talent and you would argue a waste, great 1st touch, vision, close control and another who could score goals out of nothing. I would just sit in an let Wooly wander about picking the ball up and making things happen, which he would always do.

Picture
We had some really good forwards during my time - Holroyd, McEvilly, Beesley and Rendell.

Chris Holroyd was raw and exciting and had a really good career and is banging goals in now for Wrexham while Maca was Maca - had everything you would want ability wise but obviously something missing as his talent never sustained the level it should have done.

My 9&10 would be Rendell and Beesley though.

Scotty was a proper goal scorer and was always in the right place at the right time, his movement in the area was the reason he would score goals and if the ball went in the box he would be on the end of it and is still doing that now.

Bees was a very clever player who would pull people about with movement and touch. He had a great turn that could open up spaces for others which is why he could play with any type of striker and why all the other forwards would like playing along side him. A cleaver finisher too who would pass the ball into the net. Should have played against Exeter at Wembley.

Like most players who will put their CUFC 11 on here, I could easily put others in and some will no doubt be on to me calling me for leaving them out. The truth is we had a lot of good players at the club when I was there and I feel we should have gained promotion which is the biggest disappointment in my career. The Stevenage game is a real stand out and looking back at the highlights makes me realise how good a side we had. I believe we were the best team in the league but unfortunately we never showed up against Torquay in the final.

It’s great to see the club back in the league with things looking positive for the future.

Thank you to Paul for providing his Cambridge United side - He played 121 matches for the club and was also caretaker manager during his time at the club. In total Paul played over 400 first team matches during his career.

Two days of sun and the spirits are lifted - The Apprentice Groundsman

It really makes a difference for the sun to be shining. Working outside is obviously warmer however the wind can still be fresh blowing across the common. One thing the wind can help with is the drying times.

We carried on from yesterday with areas around the Habbin being painted. See below the slide show for the food kiosks

The day started for Mick R today with the painting of a yellow line on the step outside the hospitality suite. Mick is really good at the fiddly technical jobs having worked as a maintenance man at one of the University colleges until retiring. He actually never comes to matches. More interested in music being a drummer for a local band

Les continued with the undercoating of the wood - he will probably be on it for the rest of the week finishing off the undercoating / priming of the remaining wood.

Picture
Brian and Terry commenced on the first coat of the Habbin South Tea Bar and some of the wall immediately  next to it. When the brickwork is finished Alan will begin to paint the woodwork. He painting the Habbin North shutters at present. We are changing the serving shutters from white to give them a bit more identity. Not Amber this time but trying to use up the existing paint to match the turnstile doors in the Habbin area. When the yellow is finished we will then paint the black. Hoping it will be done ready for the Port Vale match

I wrote to the FSF (Football Supporters Federation) last week concerning postponed matches. I have since spoken to them and been informed that the issue has also been raised by supporters from other clubs during the recent period.

The FSF will raising the issue at their next meeting with the ELF which will be held shortly.

When the minutes of the meeting are released I will published if possible and endeavor to keep you informed of any news in the meantime

See letter below - they were just my thoughts and there are no doubt others that could be done. However, the issue is now on the agenda going forwards.

Click her to find out more about the work that the FSF carry out on behalf of supporters.

I am the SLO at Cambridge United and would like your advice if possible

For the second time in recent years we have had matches postponed within a short timescale of kick off and involved long journeys.

These matches have involved Accrington and Morecambe. These take supporters a long time to travel from Cambridge. If I remember correctly others cancelled were at Newport having reached the Seven Bridge and Kidderminster. Both I believe were evening matches

I wonder if the FSF have any views concerning compulsory pre match inspections taking place earlier in the day if a match is at risk to avoid travelling and if you know what the actions/rules are in place if a club believes a match is risk?

At what stage should a local referee be brought in to do a pitch inspection. For example if a match is at risk should it be automatically done at 9am. Is it at the discretion of the host club if one takes place? Could a pitch inspection be taken using a calculation for example the kick off - average time to travel

Should football be looking at a traffic light system to inform supporters the risk of travelling to matches. Today, some were setting off from areas with snow to travel and found the match cancelled on route

The traffic lights would be as follows and could possibly operate during the morning of the match on the host club website.  A tweet or facebook message would not reach everyone as not everyone uses social media.

  • green is match on - no problem
  • amber match is at risk – due to weather conditions
  • red – cancelled

There may be a hundred reasons why it can not be done but is there a better way of keeping supporters informed that a match is at risk.

Can individual supporters take out insurance or are they in some strange way insured if they use a credit card for the cost of travel etc? Tickets, I understand purchased in advance may be re-funded

Have FSF looked into the issue previously and do you believe there is a way for it to be  resolved?

I also wonder if Bank Holiday matches could be treated in the same way as Christmas with sides given local matches to reduce travelling times and public transport changes in timescales etc

Thank you

Improvements at the Training Ground - Thank you - The Apprentice Groundsman

Recently we were asked if it would be possible to complete some remedial work at the training ground. We completed the areas that required refreshing and cleaning. However, the request to provide an area where the players could clean their boots safely was put on hold requiring a piece of astro turf to cover the boarding that had already been laid between the changing rooms and social ones.

While speaking to Colin Taylor on the way home from the Accrington match he kindly offered to help by not only sourcing what we needed but also to resource the laying of it.

Colin is a long time supporter of the Cambridge United and has carried out a lot of work over the years to help the club at his own expense. He is one of many who have done so and who go about it quietly in the background. He also runs a local company JC Home Designs which specialises in the installations of kitchens and bathroms.

He can be contacted via telephone on  01223 840042.

During the past week the volunteer team have been busy around the ground getting the stadium ready for two match days, clearing up after the Exeter match and also completing various activities around the ground. This week we should see more of the sun and will be able to complete some painting see further down the page.

Last week Mick Radford concentrated on some internal area painting inside the kitchen.  He also carried out some repairs in the Dublin and Premier Suites where there had been a water leak. He finished these today.

Alan Burge last week started painting some areas inside tea bar 1 catering unit and will complete this when the weather is not so good again. He also finished off the railway sign started the previous week by painting the black background and the white lines see photo below.
Picture
Today, we got outside again. Alan and Brian continued last weeks re-painting of the Habbin Tea bars returning the colour back to white from grey see below photos in the slidshow below

Terry completed preparing the last remaining tea bar in the Habbin South which is now ready for painting and will be done tomorrow.

New boy Les Weston got started today having recently retired and is already undercoating the wood which will be used for the capping around the pitch above the advert boards. Most of it was primed two weeks ago however with the damp and wet weather it was left last week.

All the safety barriers will need painting by mid-end of May. If you can help by sparing a few hours complete the form below.

Find out more about the lottery below

What is the CUFC Play2win lottery?

The lottery is run and administered by volunteer fans of Cambridge United FC as a sub group of Cambridge Fans United. The lottery is run in association with Cambridge United Football Club.

Aims
The lottery aims to raise funds for
  •  fans' amenities  at The Abbey stadium
  •  local community projects.

How does the lottery work?
Each member is issued with a four digit lottery number.
Each week there are two draws held:
The first is for a weekly prize – currently £300.
Using a random number generator the winning four digit number is drawn.

The member holding the four digit number in the same order wins the first prize.

If there is no winner then runner-up prizes will be awarded to those members holding either the first two or last two digits in the correct position and order.

The second draw is for the jackpot accumulator.

The jackpot is again drawn using the random number generator and, as with the weekly draw, the member holding the four digit number in the same order wins the jackpot amount.
If there is no winner the jackpot increases week by week by £50 until the maximum (currently £2500) is reached .

How much is membership and what happens to the money?
Each lottery membership costs £2.00 per week. Payment can be made by cash, cheque or bank standing order. Payments can be made monthly, quarterly, half yearly or annually.

95pence is paid into a Prize Fund.  This fund can only be used for prizes – the greater the number of lottery memberships, the larger the prizes.

5pence is paid into a Cost Fund. Although the lottery is run by volunteers, there are costs for licences, printing, web charges etc. Any surplus after costs is fed back into the lottery to provide, for example, additional prize draws.

70pence is paid into a fund for fan amenities in the Abbey Stadium.

30pence is paid into a Community Fund used for community projects in the Cambridge area.

With Play2Win everyone can support both the Club and the community and have some fun whilst doing it!

And I think its going to rain today - The Apprentice Groundsman

12/4/2018

Picture
I understand everyone will be saying not another article about the rain. However, it is really difficult to explain how much in falling currently and the impact it is having on the pitch. Its now about doing maintenance jobs as no work on the pitch can be done and trying to save it for the remainder of the season.

Everyday starts by doing an inspection and finding the areas of concern

Although the top of pitch can appear clear the videos will show what happens when someone walks on it or presses down.

Earlier in the week e cleared it by forking and pushing it off.  Pushing it off now will only damage the top surface more.

NEW DRAINAGE SYSTEM FITTED AT THE ABBEY The Apprentice Groundsman

12/4/2018

Picture
During the past few weeks there has been a tremendous amount of rain falling on the pitch.

Following straight after the match against Chelsea work begun on a new pitch drainage system which is being trialed in the penalty area at the South Stand.

If successful it will be fitted in other areas of the pitch. Like the pitch sprayers the soak away once fitted  is covered by turf so no one can see them in place during the match.

See below photograph of the new system and the secret piece of equipment that makes it all work

Please read below sourced from the EFL website click on here to read the full story

The wording below is taken from the article on the EFLwebsite

As well as supporting Bristol City’s Community Trust with regular player appearances, Bristol City’s Joe Bryan helped support a self-employed amateur footballer with physio treatment following a severe injury.
Doncaster Rovers’ Matty Blair has been the face of the club’s efforts to raise awareness of mental health after drawing on his own experience of dealing with the tragic loss of his brother in 2017.

Sky Bet League Two’s winner, Liam O’Neil, has volunteered across Cambridge United’s community work including a match report writing project to encourage primary school children to have an interest in reading and writing.

CUFC AGM UPDATE

10/4/2018

Picture
Shaun Grady (Director, Commercial) has reassured Cambridge Fans United that the Shareholders meeting, set for 6.00pm on Monday 30th April will not be curtailed to accommodate the Sponsors event, which is also taking place later on the same evening.o Shareholders who cannot make the start of the meeting are, nevertheless, encouraged to come along and take part.

Shaun has explained that he felt it was important that all Directors should be present to meet with shareholders and to respond to their questions and concerns, and that it had been very difficult to find the right time. CFU has been collecting questions from supporters, some of whom may not be attending the meeting in person and will shortly be passing those on to the Board members, so that answers will be available at the meeting.

Chair of CFU, Robert Osbourn, said that, whilst the need to start the meeting at 6.00pm was a disappointment, the presence of all Directors would be a demonstration of their commitment to the Shareholders whom he hoped would respond.

Shareholders who will not be able to attend in person may appoint a proxy to attend and act on their behalf, by using the proxy form included with the papers for the meeting. Proxies may be given to CFU, if members wish

Please complete the email form below if you have a question or would like to pass your proxy to CFU.

CUFC Lottery purchase accessibility ramp

10/4/2018

Picture
Last year the CUFC lottery organised by the CFU purchased an accessibility ramp to use at the club.

The ramp can be moved to different locations around the ground. See photo of the ramp above.  The ramp cost over 700 pounds and can be used on match days or during private hires.

Tonight was an important match to play - The Apprentice Groundsman

Every match at the moment seems to have its own story and difficulties to overcome.

When we arrived at the ground this morning and having checked on the condition of the  pitch we found another problem that needed to be resolved.

We found there was a significant amount of water sitting on the pitch following the heavy overnight rain. Below is an example of how many parts of the pitch looked. Mostly along the sides and in the goal areas.

It was a match we wanted to go ahead for Luke Chadwick and his team. We have seen them most weeks around the ground. It would also be nice following the past month to go through the whole season without a postponement taking place.

It certainly is challenging both Mick and Ian's know how and expertise - scroll down to read more

Left photo -  shows the squeezey tool used to remove the water. The method is  to push the sitting water off of pitch. as displayed below. The water was pushed onto the track and also behind the South Stand goal area off the pitch. The quicker you clear some more reappears

It is done repeatedly until the surface water has been removed. To much pushing and you are damaging the top surface.

The area is then forked to open up the ground for the water to drain away.  There are instances while doing this  where the water comes back through the holes created yesterday. You leave for a short period and  then revisit the new areas or existing ones to reapeat.

What also helped make the change was nature itself and the elements changed with the  rain stopping and this afternoon a light wind started to blow
