Cambridge News

Cambridge United drew 0-0 with Peterborough in the Chris Turner memorial friendly.

The sides met at London Road to pay tribute to Turner, who died earlier this year at the age of 64, having been a legend at both clubs as a player and a manager.

Turner's wife Lynne led the two sets of players out onto the pitch before kick off, with a minute's applause to show the huge respect everyone at both clubs had for the man.

The U's lined up with three centre-backs at kick off, with Harrison Dunk back in the side to start down the left flank

Peterborough Evening Post

Ah well, Chris Turner was a great centre-half so maybe he would have enjoyed a game where defences dominated.

The rest of us? Not so much. This was supposedly the Posh first team and they didn’t play very well in their final proper friendly before the start of the League One season next Saturday (August 8).

But Turner would have been far less enamoured with the failure of Posh strikers to hold the ball up (they have no Ken Charlery or Tony Adcock in this side), the slow build up play from the back which prompted some mild heckling from main stand members (Turner loved an early channel ball) or the fact that the visitors apparently decided there would be no penalty shoot-out to determine a winner (he never shirked a challenge),

Actually Cambridge boss Richard Money made a sensible decision and not just because there was no trophy to play for, only a little local pride. The ‘hostile atmosphere’ excuse was quite frankly pathetic, but the decision probably saved the fans from a very long night because on the evidence of the previous 90 minutes there was no guarantee that players would have been successful from 12 yards with only a ‘keeper to beat.
