Grosvenor’s next public meeting will take place in the Cambridge United Supporters Club at 7.30 p.m. on Monday 12th March, when all are welcome to attend. In the run up to next week’s public meeting by Grosvenor Developments about progress to build a sports village on land between the M11 and the Trumpington Park and Ride site, Cambridge Fans United has been keen to see progress made towards making the scheme a reality. Grosvenor’s plans include a new stadium for Cambridge United and ambitious facilities for the club’s Youth and Community Trust, which already has over 1,000 youngsters on its books. The Sports Village would also offer the opportunity for other local sports to get new pitches and top notch ancillary facilities. CFU Chairman, Dave Matthew Jones said “Whilst we recognise that Trumpington residents have genuine concerns about what this development might bring, the club has been waiting for this opportunity to relocate into decent accommodation for many years. However, this is not just about a football team moving, because Cambridge and its surrounding areas are in real need of facilities like these.” “Whilst there has been a growth in the population, facilities for sport and for football, in particular, have not kept pace with that expansion. Youngsters in particular, have been under catered for and that needs to change, but these plans stand to benefit everyone, as part of an agenda in which concerns about health and well being can be addressed.” “If we continue to build more houses but don’t provide proper sporting facilities for families, what sort of place will it be? If we want to continue to attract businesses and young professionals to the Cambridge area, then these things go hand in hand.” “I have lived in the Cambridge area for forty years and have seen so many schemes that would have benefitted people talked about, delayed and then disappear and I think that my children and grandchildren deserve better than that.” “I know that local people are concerned about issues like transport and disturbance, and so are football supporters. We need to work together on those concerns and overcome them to the benefit of all. Now is the time to begin to do that and for Cambridge to reap the rewards with a great scheme which we can all be proud of.” CFU BACKING UNITED 01/03/2012
Cambridge Fans United (Dave Matthew-Jones) presented Cambridge United (Renford Sargent) with a cheque for £10,000 at the recent home fixture against Guiseley. The Trust will receive shares in the club in return. CFU Chairman Dave Matthew-Jones commented “This is further evidence of the Trust’s backing for Cambridge United. We are happy to help whenever we are able. However, we can only do so if the supporters back us. It is important that everyone joins CFU.” This news follows the recent announcement that CFU launched a drive to recruit 1,000 members and the news that U’s manager, Jez George, and the entire playing squad had signed up to CFU. Dave added “This time last year we helped pay for repairs to a bridge so as to keep the Habbin Stand open” “This cheque provides funds to aid the club in moving forward positively this year. Whilst we work for both the supporters and the club, we do need help to ensure that progress continues, both on and off the pitch.” “For the equivalent of six pence per day you can join CFU. It can be done online, by post or at the CFU caravan on matchdays. The summer is approaching and for two months the club will receive no match day income. The target is to get through this period and start next season free of debt.” “The more members CFU has, the more often it can provide Cambridge United with investment.” Thanks go to all those who have already joined or renewed their lapsed subscriptions.
